Microsoft generally DOES NOT port. So... IF, Silverlight is on Linux, it's very likely using wine.

And it's very likely the implementation is NOT open.

Also, while Moonlight seems to be related to Mono, it's really a different beast altogether.

A try to get a closed source finger in the open source porridge?

Microsoft will say how they have been helping open source and use it to gain with lawsuits and patent's they want. First way to take something over is to infiltrate/integrate, cause confusion on the facts and then completely take it over. Proof is looking at their past and their businesses practices. Any company that falls for it and later cries foul play are idiots and deserve what they get. I doubt anyone here will argue that they DON'T have the money to bully who they want when their pieces are in place.

1) Buy raw undeveloped technologies and concepts from others
2) Develop them further
3) Slap a patent on them and scream you are the inventor and first came up with it
4) Seemingly "support" open source stuff
5) Secretly lobby against it and spread FUD about it
6) From time to time, enforce your patents on it
7) ???
8) Profit!

1)to buy? no, there is a much more easier method for collecting those raw technologies: CodePlex Foundation.
