well, it IS hard to compete with systems tuned for GAMES...
Redmond makes a reasonable game platform, and even pretty good for high school student's 10 page essays....but reliable, secure, business or scientific software, not so much! if you need to remove a screw, don't reach for a hammer.. want to play a game--don't boot to an industrial strength system.. if you want both, it may require two different systems--ta da! hence we have the ability to dual boot (or, have two different machines even...AND an XBox, Wii, PS, etc).. want a kick@ss, multi-user, online, FPS Linux game? give BZFlag a go. ymmv -- goldie |

Yes, you have a point there goldie - sadly.
I was able to dump my copy of Vista off my laptop earlier this year when WINE really started to become functional. I am now able to run my favourite game of all time under Linux - Empire Earth! I still can't run the addon to it, but it is such a step forward (for me anyway) that I am happy to put up with the glitches, and/or reduced performance brought about by emulation because I was then able to get rid of MS Windows all together. All the games I play - ETQW / ET / HL1 / HL2 / Battlefield 1942 / RTCW are all playable under Linux, either native or through emulation and it was nice to be finally free of the MS monster. Not that I'm a fanatic gamer, and quite frankly I suck big time at the online shooters (old age methinks!), but I like to potter around every now and then .But, if I switch back to dual booting for games, then I'm also able to save a lot of money when I buy my next laptop because I could then go for (I hate to say this, it really pains me :S ) an ATI video card instead of a double price Nvidia! And in 99% of cases the MS O/S comes with the laptop whether I want it or not anyway. As long as I don't use the MS O/S on the Internet I guess it will be fine, ie no virus/spyware checkers or the like.

Quake is still kicking around QUAKE LIVE . Funny, I was looking at my old Quake collection on my book shelve the other day and I decided to see if any other Quake releases have been released after Quake Wars and found Quake Live.
Its pretty much a scaled down version of Q3, loaded from your web browser. Still very addictive and the competition is still fierce
