What you report doesn't surprise me.

I'm running the milestones on a 1.8GHz AMD Sempron with 512MB. KDE4 performs well enough and originally my first impression was that generally it responded as quickly or slightly better than 3.5.10. It certainly felt smoother. However when I return to 3.5.10 on 11.1, I realize it's quicker than KDE4 on 11.2, but I don't run Compiz.

A user will generally be happier with a consistent response time, even if it's slower than an inconsistent but faster response time. I think that may be the reason why initially I thought KDE4 was better.
