As Kastorff says, accounts were not merged, due to not being able to use the same passwords in the databases, sending out lots of e-mails with unique passwords was not a viable option,so we decided on everyone creating a new account, which was easier.so every member is unique, and that includes the spammers. So, please, say a thank you to being an individual who is part of a greater conglomeration of minds. And a thank you to the staff wouldn't go amiss, it's amazing what goes on in the back-ground and their continued support is greatly accepted
Andy

Then, jump forward to the 4,000 Marines now kicking off an operation in Afghanistan; give them each all the "Magic Bullets" the US GDP will procure and tell them to defend the 1.200 mile border with Pakistan -- bet the commander will trade some "Magic Bullets" for more troops with regular old ammo.

I was snarky to Keith, who in my opinion deserves all that he gets. However I have nothing but praise for the Staff of openSUSE. They do a excellent job. It is amazing the Kabuki dance around the fact that many members existed prior to the merge and then followed on to the combined Forum. Whether they were properly transfered at the time or had to re-register. It would be curious to know how successful it (This Forum) would have been without the merge and close down of the two previous Forums.
I think it is great that the Forum has 30K and hope it gets many more. |

So if it started in July 2008 that would be 12 months: July to June inclusive. that's 2500 sign ups a month, or 82 per day -- very impressive. So after maybe 2 spammers per day that's about 80 per day. Just as impressive.
Here are the old soldiers who made the merge happen (as far as I know): Justin: 69_rs_ss SF Admin Andrew: andrew18 SF Admin Francis: apokryphos Wiki Wouter: Darkelve SF Moderator Andy: deltaflyer SLS Admin Kevin: elsewhere SF Moderator Chris: encryptio SF Moderator Stefan: FeatherMonkey SLS Moderator Geoff: geoffro SLS Moderator Rossana Mattaa:arlyle harryc SF Moderator Jordi: Jop SLS Moderator Keith: kastorff SF Site Admin Kim: kgroneman Novell Site Admin Marcel: Marcel_Cox Novell Admin Mathew: MattB SLS Moderator Lee: oldcpu SLS Moderator Paul: pturner7 SF Moderator Jim: snakedriver SF Moderator John: swerdna SF Moderator Uwe: ubuckesfeld Novell Moderator Wolfgang: Vir@s SLS Site Admin Did I miss anyone? The new forums have washed in like a tidal wave to fill the gap left by the old ones, hopes have been fulfilled -- well done ppl!

Just to clear up some facts about the stats. As Keith stated, no users were actually "moved" over but as Matt stated, users from the old communities did come over and register here so you can count them as "moving over" in a manner of speaking. Bottom line, we now have over 30,000 registered users. In looking at the detailed stats, of those total registered users, about 2500 of them are what I call an active user. How I know that, I'm not telling because it's used in helping to keep spam down.
Also you have to keep in mind that people that just show up here, look around, then go away are NOT counted in that 30,000 nor are NNTP users who haven't logged into the web interface. People actually have to login here to be counted in that 30,000....not an easy forum login, but actually create a Novell login. As for current online users, some of the "guest" users are definitely search engine bots. Currently I see: 33 members and 1687 guests. Remeber that the login here has a 60 minute timeout so it gets rid of those guest connections that aren't doing anything. Of course not all of those are legit users but it's just an indicator of the health of our forums which is doing really well for the little over a year we've been online. I actually reset the most users online counter a few months ago because there was a day back in December that the login system wasn't quite working right and it skewed the stats. Matt, as for calling the folks that worked the process "Mickey Mouse" then going on to say Keith deserves everything he gets is bordering on a violation of the T&C which states: Quote:
Though stats aren't always very accurate or a good indicator of the health of a community, I see we DO have a vibrant, healthy community here. That's what counts. Arguing over statistics isn't productive. 30,000 *is* a significant registration milestone and I, for one, celebrate it and am looking forward to the 40,000 mark.

Oh..and one more clarification...the numbers reported her are just for these forums and DO NOT count any other openSUSE web site. Hope that clears that up.

Greetings from Guelph. I have been a registered member since the old forums when I first started using Linux in 2006. As you can see by the number of my posts I do not post a lot here but I have always found the OpenSuse forums pleasant to visit and very helpful in times of need. I also praise OpenSuse 11.1 over on the EEE User site because of the brilliant way it runs on my EEE PC 701.
So, may I say sincerely, thank you to all the hard working folks, moderators and admins and knowledgeable members who keep this forum running. 30,000? I want to celebrate too!

Informative and fair Mr. Groneman. I will strive to avoid running afoul of the T&C where possible. Though I have to complement the drafters of it, it seems to have something for any occasion.
I wonder how many hand of hands the NNTP (Naked Novell Tribal People) account for in the scheme of things. Perhaps National Geographic can send out researchers to provide a Census. Always liked the pictures of Tribal People in the Magazine. |
