#suse requires users to be registered on Freenode, webchat is a no-go.

And no, we’re not going to change it. Prevents flooders, spammers and other idiots.

Is registration a relatively new development?
IIRC for several months I participated in several openSUSE chats on freenode including #suse before registering, Initial logon to freenode returned an error but didn’t prevent me from fully participating in any channel.

Only recently(approx 45 days ago as I post this message) because I sometimes connect from the T-Mobile network, Freenode <requires> any clients connecting from that network to be fully registered on Freenode (and then of course all initial connection errors disappeared).

Was using Konversation client although I doubt that should have made a diff.

I’m not sure if it is or not, but it’s a good idea for the specific
reasons Chrysantine enumerated.
