I have no plans of using Windows 7 any more than I did previous windows versions. (ie not at all)

I am curious if Windows 7 will impact Grub and the installation Software for Linux distributions, which for example, were impacted when Windows Vista was introduced.

Lee, I'm running tests on it with grub to make sure on info I'm writing for an article in Linux Format.
Vista has issues IIRC when attempting to install service packs and grub is written to the MBR or even if Grub is say to the extended partition and the boot flag is switched to the extended.
It's easy to circumnavigate. Just restore MBR and or the boot flag, boot windows, install the service pack, restore grub.

I'll report on 7 soon.

@ReferenceSeete: Well, XP was extremely far away from Windows 95/98, and at first people hated XP. As time went on they got used to the way XP did things, and now a lot of people seem to think thats the way its always been. It will just involve a period of adjustment.

In reference to the poll, I am currently using Windows 7 on my netbook and I enjoy using it. It runs extremely well on modest hardware, I find the interface intuitive and easy to use, and it is a lot faster in basic operations than Vista (and in a few cases XP). I enjoyed using Vista too, so seeing so much improvement in Windows 7 really makes me excited about its release.

you can bet on it...it will absolutely mess up something...

don't you know they LOOK for ways to make it difficult to use anything
other than Windows[tm]...they do NOT want anyone dual booting. (period)

When I installed Windows 7 RC I unhooked all my hd's, hooked up an blank one and did it that way so Win7 could have the whole thing. When I hooked the other hard drives back up I could have used Grub but chose to use GAG boot loader. I anticipated problems trying to do it with the other hard drives hooked up. It has always been like that with MS Windows and I didn't see a reason why it would be different now.

I'm a No because I don't have any systems powerful enough yet (min 1 GB of Ram I believe, I have 512 MB). I want to get a pair of GB sticks of ram for a desktop I'm not doing much with and give it a try.

That's interesting. It's true shifts have an adjustment period, but the Win98->XP gap seems smaller than the XP->Win7 gap imho.

Having held onto Win96 OSR2 for way too long (until XP SP2 was almost out) my family didn't really have to adjust much. I'm not looking forward to all the questions I'll have to field due to the changes in Windows 7 at all - even though I like Win7.

Unlike XP where basic things were the same so people could work right away and ask questions later...The changes in Win7 mean the timid will have questions right away - The new taskbar paradigm all but ensures it.

As a largely self-supporting computer user, Windows 7 is the best Windows yet. As the primary source of technical support to my loved ones, I hope their XP machines run for a very very long time. The fact that I have been unable to roll most of them over to openSUSE is unfortunate because it results in me reserving HDD space for Windows when I have no real need for it.

That would be Win95 OSR2, not Win96.

'edit' button not available for some reason...

I've asked my wife ( BIG winXP user) if she wishes to buy and install Windows 7 and I have received a resounding NO in reply. She wants to stay with WinXP. Her foray into Vista has burned her perception to try anything else, and she just laughs off the press hype around Windows 7.

I'm still curious how Windows 7 will impact grub, as that is what is most likely to impact me on Linux, when it comes to attempting to help users. Knowing the grub impact may eventually help me, if I need to purchase a new PC, and if trying to have the OEM Windows7 removed (to reduce price and to remove trojan/virus susceptibility) is too painful.
