KDE 3.5.

I've tried Gnome. A couple of the servers at the studios use CentOS, which defaults to Gnome (though you can install KDE, if you like). Anytime I have to use it, I am baffled at how unwieldy it is. Simplicity has completely trumped function, as far as I'm concerned.

Example: when you open a file manager window in Gnome, there's no easy, intuitive way to go back to the parent directory. I like the up arrow that lets me go all the way to /, if I want to.

Frankly, the results of the poll here are heartening. From time to time rumors will come out that Suse is thinking of changing to Gnome as the default, and if that ever happens, I'll change distros. Ubuntu is a good example of why I'd do that: they emphasize and default to Gnome. The offer KDE (Kubuntu), but it has the look and feel of a thrown-together, "oh, well, we have to offer KDE, here it is."

Just my opinion, but one I feel strongly about.

it's can't offer a suggestion because that's personal preference. The default in 11.2 was made due to the community wanting it like that ( https://features.opensuse.org/306967 ) but this still doesn't say which one is better

I'm a gnomer on Ubuntu/Debian, and I agree with this - the new nautilus is rubbish. The old one worked much better.

I use KDE on suse though, just because it's beautifully implemented.

Can't really choose between them.

I also heartily recommend trying out xmonad, which you can find in software search in the build service. It takes getting used to, but once you've got your head around how it works it's actually really usable, and first class in efficiency and stability.

I like Gnome becuase its easy to use, i tried KDE3 for awhile but it was too confusing and annoying for me to use. Tho i did enjoy how customizable it was and nice it looked.
Right now im considering trying out xfce because ive never had it.

Hopefully a small one, like a green lizard perhaps?

Anyway, KDE4 is shaping up, lots of glitz, but I miss the basic functionality, like integrated shortcut menus in dolphin. When I right-click in a file there's almost nothing, while in KDE3's konqueror everything I want is there.

Um, there is everything in there. Right-clicking on a file gives me; Cut, Copy, Rename, Move to trash, Delete, Open with, Actions, Compress, Copy to, Move to, Properties. Half of these have sub-menu's

Also, Dolphin is not here to implement all features of Konqi nor is it here to offer the same and look the same as Konqi. you still have a choice between it and Konqi for KDE4
