![]() The reason being I went here to the hplip site and it said nothing about HP DeskJet 772c working with the hplip driver: HP Linux Imaging and Printing But neither is it on the unsupported print list (so it is confusing): HP Linux Imaging and Printing So then I went to the Linux printing site and according to the Linux printing site your DeskJet 772c should work: OpenPrinting database - Printer: HP DeskJet 722C That site recommends the pnm2ppa printer driver (source forge site for that driver is here: pnm2ppa - GhostScript Print Filter ) where that site suggests the pnm2ppa comes with ghostscript. Its not clear to me if it comes with the regular ghostscript, or if it needs a modified ghostscript. I suspect the latter. The linux printing site does say: PPA printer, does not work with PCL drivers (as HPLIP, "gimp-print", "cdjXXX", "pcl3", ...) There is also more information here on the pmp2ppa for the 722c: http://www.openprinting.org/show_dri...P-DeskJet_722C The faq on the pnm2ppa site gives instructions how to set this up: pnm2ppa - FAQ After you have it uncompressed on your hard drive in the pnmp2ppa-1.12 directory you will have to read the "readme.txt" and "install" file for further directions. From what I have read, HP did not produce that many PPA printers, and hence their support for it is poor. Hence this is one of the small number of HP printers that does NOT "just work" and some additional configuring will be needed. Unfortunately there is no "step by step" guide, and hence some investigation will be needed to sort this. This sort of extra work can be avoided, if one checks for EASE of Linux compatibility before one purchases any Linux printer but telling you to close the barn door now does not unfortunately help you. |

Note, the Op still hasn't replied anything.
Pretty classic, imo.

Thanks for the info. Half the battle in LINUX is knowing where to find the information. This helps a lot with that. By the way, I have had this printer for about 10 years and I am not giving it up because it is the only one that always works(I have tried quite a few in the last ten years and they always endup in the trash). And as I said only SUSE and Mandriva cannot install it automatically.

I think I am posting in te wrong place. I justed noticed this forum is about soapbox. I will re-state my problem in the right palce after I have read and tried the infdromation provided by OldCPU.

Well I changed my mind. None of the things OldCPU suggested made any difference and no matter what I do the printer simply is not getting data from the computer. I didn't buy a computer to waste my life fussing with it for days on end. I reinstalled Mint GLoria which worked flawlessly (initially - after a few days icons start to disappear). Too bad. I like Suse a lot better. But I am fed up.
So I ordered Windows 7. If I have to do anything more complicated than e-mail or a simple text document (that doesn't require using a fancy printer) I will use Windows and reserve LINUX strictly for the Internet connection and e-mail (thats all it seems to be capable of). Thanks for the help but I won't be following this forum any longer. |

OK Folks, I have purchased in the past 6 months 13 different printers for various customers, and the one that came out on top was canon. lexmark is ok on some models but the canon has the better drivers. and the worst was dell. these things might as well be placed in the fireplace. i have a lexmark x1150 all in one and a canon ip 2600 the canon is the better printer by far. if you are looking for a printer for suse the look in the printer database in linux printing.org and see which printers are listed under the works perfectly area and choose from there. that way you wont have any problems.
