Pulseaudio (to be fair)

I am not a fan of Pulseaudio, because it broke the basic things that must work for me. I've even ranted about it indirectly by posting about how to disable it on these forums.

I think its advocates deserve a fair hearing though, so FWIW see Slashdot

Funny how all the problems go away once you remove PA and go back to pure ALSA, even with those.. "broken programs".

i uninstalled PluseAudio and away went the problems, also..

+another one here. I addlock pulseaudio* at install time, but a few media players (mplayer based, iirc) pull in pulse libraries as a dependency. Luckily Kaffeine doesn't.

I wouldn't worry. The libpulse libraries can't do anything without something calling them.

The nightmare with MPlayer is that /usr/bin/gnome on openSUSE has some hacks in it intended to make pulseaudio work that aren't undone when pulseaudio is removed.

When one tries ALSA or SDL audio output on mplayer one gets errors because mplayer is looking for pulseaudio stuff that isn't available thanks to hacked environment variables in /usr/bin/gnome.

Thanks for the info and link. I'm on kde, so you are saying go ahead to install these players, along with libpulse, and the libraries will never be called because the pulseaudio server isn't installed? That sounds right.

Ironically, after seeing this article, pulse completely broke for me - it
had been working fine for me prior. I guess now I'm feeling the pain
others have felt. ;-)

I don't think it is included in 11.2. After a recent install of RC1 I
thought, "oh, must delete pulseaudio", only to find it wasn't installed.

This is definitely worth looking into to find the exact state.

On my sandbox PC which is running a 32-bit 11.2 RC1 I noted sound "just worked" but I did not run any diagnostic scripts to see the exact configuration. I do vaguely recall noting that pulse was disabled, and I have a suspicion that pulse may be installed by default in openSUSE-11.2, but may also be disabled by default on openSUSE-11.2 for some ( all ? ) hardware.
