And by ported I mean what Mono enthusiasts claim: you take the .net windows code, you compile it with Mono and then you'll be able to run it on Linux, just as one would do with any Java application (in fact, no need to recompile in Java, but anyways...).

Mono I won't tackle with a 10 foot pole, as I know very very little about it.

And as long as the posts in this thread mention mono and portability in the same sentence, I won't take any sides.

But there were posts where "mono" was mistakenly or deliberately not included in the claim, and it read to me that the argument about applications being ported was then being exanded outside of mono to all Linux applications (claiming no Linux apps were ported), including those not associated with mono.

It was in that vein that I replied.

There are (what I consider) signficant applications written for Linux that have subsequently been ported for Windows (not using Mono).

Exactly. And that was not because of Mono, but because the toolkits those Linux applications are using have also been ported to windows (for instance: QT, gtk+ or wxWidgets) or because of the availability of open programming languages/frameworks such as python, ruby or even perl.

That said, my point is that there is no real need for Mono. At least for us Linux' users (thank Mono, windows' users are now able to run applications like Tomboy). As far as I see it, Mono has been used for making a certain number of Linux applications available to windows' users. Not the other way around. Of course there is nothing wrong with developers wanting to target a bigger user-base. That's a cool thing. The danger here is the diversion of development resources and the threat that a general adoption of Mono as a development platform imposes in terms of patent issues. And all the risk with no clear benefit for us Linux' users.

Getting back to my original post, Ubuntu has earned their good reviews this time. After all of the dust settled they managed to put out a good release this time around!

Ubuntu and Kubuntu both run well, boot time is good and with the exception of Empathy everything is in nice shape. I would have never thought things would turn out well from what I saw a few weeks ago but they ended up doing a good job in the end. I still think their development process could be less chaotic but they did earn the reviews and hype this time around.
