OS11.2 and VDPAU & XvBA implementation

Most OpenSUSE users have the hardware, even our laptops have the ability to make use of VDPAU or XvBA video acellerators. MS Vista, MS 7-beta and OS X users have it working without them knowing it even exists. So when will us lesser linux useres have the same privilege? Have we quietly given up on the accellerated graphics and video front? We dont even have a decent gaming API like MS DirectX. Ok, we have OpenGL 3.2 which is good, but not quite as good as DirectX and only if you have an Nvidia graphics chip.

Nvidia's VDPAU is in the works somewhere but how will it be implemented in OpenSUSE 11.2? Will we need to edit various lines to get it working or will the dev boys deal with it as I believe they should

AMD's XvBA, well this doesnt seem to be released as yet... so the wait continues. Nothing really to say other than this is a disgraceful situation. No wonder full Bluray implementation on the linux desktop is still lightyears away

Anyway, as a start... how about a correct and full implementation of Nvidia's VDPAU?

OS X doesn't have it until SL (QuicktimeX has 264 accel on 9400+) and Win7 doesn't have it enabled by default either - you'll need a suitable application like MPlayer Classic and even that is *very* picky regarding what types of H264 files it will accelerate, all will not work.

SMplayer should include the option use pass VDPAU as the video output pretty easily if it doesn't have it already (I haven't checked). However as MPlayer doesn't have a fallback ability yet they would have to analyse the file and deduce whether it can be played via the VDPAU.

I must've been dosing when I wrote that - what I meant to say was "SMplayer should include the option to use the VDPAU video output device as an option" and it should not be a problem since it's merely a frontend that passes commands to the actual mplayer binary.

-vo vdpau and suitable codec like ffmpeg/vdpau.

However the issue arises with the fact that some 8800 cards can't do VDPAU at all, for example the 8800 320/640 series is actually *older* than other 8800 cards of the same series and don't support Purevideo2 at all.

Mmm... not sure if we're on the same wave length... Perhaps I've not explained myself... Having now used Suse for the last 10 yrs or so I seem to have reached a point where I just want it to work. I no longer have time to tinker and tweek. I'm now exclusively an end user and want to see it stand up from the crowd and just work.
Yes I'd expect to install drivers for my specific hardware but that should be about it. Why should I have to tell the media player or video editor to use VDPAU or not. This should happen automatically! Or am I just missing the point

We are not packagers on this forum. Rather we try to help users solve their problems from packages packaged by others, and share in their experience so others can benefit. We don't repackage. We don't have a pipeline into the packagers.

If you came here to try to influence the packagers, then this is the wrong place. But if it was intended to just blow of steam, then soapbox is indeed a good place

I was checking out Ubuntu and Fedora forums a while back on this very vdpau aspect , and they seem to be in a similar state to openSUSE, ... possibly worse, when it comes to vdpau.

If you have anything specific in terms of us helping you with an existing specific problem, please post and start a new thread on one of our help subforum areas (such as multimedia), and I'm sure someone will try help.

I must simply be letting off steam and yes I know the packagers are not the forum's moderators. But maybe they peruse them from time to time...
Being totally convinced that Linux is a great OS but yet to show its full colours on the desktop is becomming frustrating... Going by the track record OSS will reach the milestone just as the closed source club moves to the cloud with the next new technology...

I do hope that applications such as MPlayer (and its front end smplayer), xine, vlc, ... etc ... eventually do have automatic vdpau utilization.

I note the MS-Windows product Media Player Classic Home Cinema will automatically take advantage of nVidia Pure Video (windoze vdpau) and also ATI's Avivo to play HD videos smoothly on hardware with the appropriate graphic card. Linux is lagging there, although not all MS-Windoze players have that capability that exists in Media Player Classic Home Cinema .

Yes but such things are the fault of those who make the Bluray format, and the graphics cards.
Linux can utilize such things if it was more supported by the major vendors.

Hi
Been playing around with google-chrome and noticed that the
gecko-mediaplayer plugins I build have a dropdown to select VDPAU...
I'm guessing if it's on in Mplayer, then it will be functional there.
