Hi. I would like to know. Is there any special reason why all the DE's in OpenSUSE come preconfigurated to look like windows, instead of coming with vanilla (as they come out of the sources) appearance setup?

Familiarity is probably a reason why OpenSuse has a windows like appearence, but other distros are not so generic.
Ubuntu initially looks like the same Gnome that Fedora uses, but the two are completely different under the surface. Mandriva and Kubuntu is another example, both use KDE4 but use entirely different set ups. I have used many distros in my time, each one with its own personality. |

for new users it makes more sense to first present them with something familiar to start with so they can get to work right away the more experienced users will just reconfigure it to what they want anyways. that the first thing i do when i install a new distro is copy all of my configs to the home directory and get my personal configs back.

Here is a poll about this question:
How many people keep the default openSUSE look? - openSUSE Forums.

At first, it was a turn-off for me. Now I kinda like it and openSUSE has been the prettiest distro for some time now.
Of course, that can all change very easily with themes.
