Failed to start arbitrary executable file formats

Suddenly my portable opensuse boots with this error. I don’t remember clearly if I did an update before having this problem though.

When I boot to log in screen

the resolution is out of scale like no video driver installed
I can log in but then network doesn’t work either

So I looked up /var/log/boot.log, there’s this error message at the very beginning

Failed to start Arbitrary Executable File formats file system automount point

And the error asked me to check proc-sys-fs-binfmt_misc.automount,

Which kernel are you using?

uname -a

What kernel packages do you have installed?

rpm -qa | grep kernel

Does /proc/sys/ exist?

Well… The “Mono:Community” repo there is for factory. You have to
change the URL to the one for 13.1. Then you have to locate every
package installed from that repo and replace with correct version.

Then you have several repeated repos. Number 3 to 8 are duplicates of 15
to 22 (compare the URLs, not the names). So purge out all the duplicates.

12 and 13 are duplicates. Purge one.

It does not mean that this is the source of your current problem, but it
can indeed cause problems.

That’s most likely the reason for you problem.

Uninstall this with YaST or zypper:

sudo zypper rm kernel-desktop-base

and boot to the 3.11.6 kernel, it should work there.

Then you might want to update kernel-desktop-3.11.10 (NOT kernel-desktop-base) manually, again either with YaST or:

sudo zypper in kernel-desktop-3.11.10

Apper/YaST->Online Update should install that one as well though. I’m not sure why you got kernel-base instead…

If you get any dependency conflicts when doing the above, please post them. Maybe that would give an explanation.

Hi wolfi323, you are absolutely right ! I followed all your instructions now it’s all back to work! I didn’t see any conflict popping up.
It’s really strange to me too as I don’t touch those kernel thing so I don’t know how the kernel-base got installed. Recently I only did one thing big to openSuse that is to uninstall vmware-tool package which gave me an error during start up.

Hello robin_listas, I will purge the redundant repos. Thank you ! Yes, I upgraded from 12.3. So far so good, I cleared the .kde configurations though.

Which method? Via zypper dup, or via boot dvd, choose upgrade?
If the second case, you may have still some old packages lying around.

Hm, maybe you uninstalled kernel-desktop-3.11.10 manually somehow (maybe indirectly via dependencies)?
In that case it gets added to the SoftLocks file and YaST/zypper don’t want to install it automatically anymore.
And if something else needs kernel-desktop in that case, it might pull in kernel-desktop-base instead because that provides “kernel-desktop” as well.

Btw, this behaviour has been removed in Factory recently, because it can be very confusing for users, especially in the case of kernel modules.

It’s very likely when I uninstalled vmware-desktop-guest something and the main kernel got uninstalled somehow.
