Hello every one I’ve recently installed the open suse 12.3
and I’m using the Linux system for the first time in my life so I should bee taken as a very beginner
the problem I have is when the system is booting the usb ports are not being recognized and I’m not able to use my external HDD ot any thumb drive
I’m receiving this message of error along with other errors
usb 2-1: device not accepting address 2, error -110
I hope some one can help

                                                  regards

Hello and welcome to the OpenSuse forums!

Let’s collect some additional information to help zero in on the issue. Can you please run the following commands after a fresh boot and post the output here? (Surround the output using the code tag button above.)

You must run these commands as the root user in the command line. You may start a root shell by clicking on the Geko (or alt-f2) and searching for “root shell”.

Commands:

dmesg
lspci
lsmod
uname -a

Also, have a look in your bios and see if there are any BIOS settings related to USB which might apply.

o.k I pasted on suspaste.org
SUSE Paste
hope you can help

That’s far too much to read. Question first: is Legacy USB enabled in the BIOS?

Dear Mr.Knurpht
about your question is Legacy USB enabled in the BIOS?
I don’t that as I said I’m newbie in the openSUSE if you can tell me how to check about that to enable it in case it was not enabled, I’ll be grateful
though I do have a windows7 side by side in same laptop and the USB ports all works just fine

thanks for you and for any one can help who’s reading these lines

The bios is neither linux nor windows. It is accessed before booting any
system by pressing certain key, which usually a text line says which key
it is. Just navigate the bios screens and find out if there is a setting
that says something like legacy usb.

When your system boots up, you get a splash screen or text telling you about your system, and usually it’s accompanied by a beep. On your notebook, when you hear the beep, you should be able to press ‘F10’ to enter your bios setup. A quick (google) glance at your bios tells me that you may not be able to adjust your USB settings to either enable or disable USB legacy options.

On the flip side of this, I’ve also started having USB loading issues with my keyboard and mouse on boot. But it eventually clears up and my system boots properly. I can see where this would be an issue if someone encrypts their /home.

well, this depends on the BIOS brand. Other options are Esc, F2, Del.

Hello all
I did the bios check and there was no usb legacy options or any usb options at all I do realy think the problem is with the openSUSE itself because I’m not having this issue with my windows 7 which I mentioned earlier
I think there is some missing software that might recognize the usb ports 1,2
by the way the third usb port is already recognized and works well with my openSUSE12.3 the only problem is with the usb ports 1,2
another thing I noticed yesterday with my windows 7, I inserted a external HDD in to usb port 1 and in some point I needed to copy some files from the extrnal HDD to a thumb drive so I inserted a thumb drive in to usb port 2
and then suddenly the external HDD vanished from the sight it was like safely removed and reconnected again in a blink with the 2 drives there the EXT HDD and the thumb drive which make me thing that the 2 usb ports are connected together unlike the usb port 3 which is separate from them

Hi everyone!

I’m facing the same problem. I’ve just bought an Acer Aspire v5 laptop, which comes with 3 usb ports (1 3.0, 2 2.0). But in OpenSude 12.3 just one of the 2.0 works (or recognize whatever I plug into them). The other ones don’t recognize anything.

I have a dual boot installation. In Windows 7 all of them works properly.

I also need help here…

Tks and rgds!

The standard kernel for 12.3 (version 3.7.x) is too old to support USB 3.0. When
openSUSE 13.1 is released in 2 weeks, its kernel (3.11.x) should be better. Your
other option would be to add the repo for newer kernels. I don’t know the exact
steps as I build my own, but someone here should be able to help you.

Thanks lwfinger!!

I’m waiting for this new version…Maybe I’ll try some kernel “update” as I will do a brand new installation (not upgrade).

If I do something like that, I’ll let you know…

Tks and regards

You were right! I upgrade my kernel and now all of my USB ports are working properly!

I followed this article: https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/jdmcdaniel3/opensuse-installing-new-linux-kernel-versions-134/

Best rgds…tks!
