Opensuse 12.2 does not detect wireless card and bluetooth

I just installed 12.2 on my physical machine. No bluetooth and wireless adapted detected and that too on a brand new hardware which came with ubuntu 11.10 pre-installed. I don’t know where should I find the drivers for my DELL WIRELESS 1704 CARD and Bluetooth

I installed rfkill and this was the output

/usr/sbin/rfkill list

0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

I checked the Hardware Information in Yast. No entries related to WLAN not even under the USB and PCI catagories.

I’m using a dell inspiron 15R laptop. You could check up the hardware detail hereand enter and service tag ‘DM3HDS1’ ( without quotes)

Please post result of

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

Tell us if you have a wired connect ATM

Without knowing anything about your Dell laptop, it may that the bluetooth device is connected internally to the USB subsystem (like mine is).
To get the chipset details:

lsusb

This is the output

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

08:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:4365] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0016]

And yes, My wired connection is working.

There are no Linux drivers for that 14e4:4365. Even the proprietary,
closed-source driver wl from Broadcom does not support it.

Your only possibility is to try ndiswrapper and the Windows driver, which might
work. If not, you should plan on purchasing a USB wifi device. Eventually, wl or
brcm80211 will support that chip, but I cannot predict when that will be.

Its an atheros make I guess. I found these details regarding the wireless and bluetooth drivers from the dell site. Am I going to have issues with the bluetooth as well?

I got a forbidden when I tried to access that link.

The “14e4” part of the PCI ID says that it is a Broadcom part without any
question. Atheros has nothing to do with it.

If the BT is part of the same card, I would expect issues with it as well.

This is my laptop configuration as per dell database

Dell manufacture so many variations, I think you might be confused.
Never mind what their web site says
Pay attention to the actual hardware info we have from your device
It’s a Broadcom device, with no support currently.

You could try ndiswrapper (I wouldn’t).

You can buy a USB dongle that will work for less than $10
If you want a recommendation, PM me

Thanks everyone… I have installed on an experimental basis. I guess that gives me an opportunity to give ndiswrapper a try. Personally, I have an aversion to accessories jutting out all around my device… LOL  (personal choice).

However, I’ll get back to you with the results.

ndiswrapper requires the XP driver

Check here
From @swerdna: Madwifi or Ndiswrapper Wireless Network Drivers - Suse/openSUSE 10, 11.0

Unfortunately, the Dell page is not explicit enough with its hardware description of the networking hardware, and there looks to be different options available with the hardware. As Larry has already mentioned, it is likely that your BT 4.0 device will have issues. I note the following from your lsusb results:

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21d7 Broadcom Corp.

As suspected, the kernel does not identify it as a BT device, although a quick search of this chipset led me to this Ubuntu bug report (concerning this and similar devices):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/921908

It appears that your device requires firmware to be loaded prior to loading the btusb module.

I’m at the limits of my knowledge with this, but Larry (or another guru) may be able to assist you further here.

Now, I understand the gravity of this. Since my laptop came pre-installed with ubuntu 11.10 I decided to give 12.04 LTS a try. And it didn’t work. :(… I tried installing ndiswrapper and guess what I couldn’t start it the way I read it worked on ubuntu with a GUI. so I went to the terminal … and installed all *.inf files I could extract out of the exe file I downloaded from dell. It showed me installing *.inf… and so I thought it got fixed. No… I’m still in the same rut. Could anyone of you tell me how to make it work with ndiswrapper? Before that if caf4926 is right about the XP drivers I’m done for the day… This **** driver has only Win7 version.

It seems I’ll call up the customer support and I intend to write to micheal@dell.com to make a serious escalation with this. Also, I will write to micheal_dell@dell.com if that is a valid email id… Dell didn’t do this right.

Like I said
Easy option a USB

Or buy a replacement PCI device that works

Since my laptop came pre-installed with ubuntu 11.10
Really… from Dell?

this time I nailed it… check the picture… its my system configuration. Its unique and this time I got the screenshot. I guess its not blocked.

You did not mark this page for public use. It is blocked.

Trust me in my google drive I had marked this picture as public “anyone on the internet anyone can access, no sign in required”. Seems like what ever I touch is buggy.

This time I could access it. It is blurry but I could read it. I am not sure of
its significance for this discussion as the circled item is a keyboard, and the
wireless is never mentioned.

How was the wireless driven in Ubuntu 11.10? You need to duplicate that on every
other Linux version.
