Some doubt about "kind of" bugs in the forum-software.

O.K. let us see this. I have since yesterday problems to load the pages of the forum normally. From 22:00 GMT+1 time I was unable to log in at all. This morning it is better but as I write the page is in a “won’t load state” that I well know. In these cases I have to wait the autosave function did it’s job and then reload the whole thing and then recover the post. Not ideal.
Now that I did this, I am able to change paragraph, while it hasn’t finish to load I can’t. The only symptoms I encounter is that in the status bar there is a page loading indication. This is with Firefox 3.6.26

Another thing that is puzzling me is the usage of emoticons. There does not seem any comprehensible rule. One user states to be able to post as much as he wants over NNTP, another claims a limit of 4, other had (like me) 3, but recently I cannot put more than two.

There is then a repeatable bug with at least one of the emoticons. If you insert the following one:

<:)

then at least with me, if I do submit the post, all the text after this sign is gone. And the emoticon itself too. This is repeatable.
Probably all useless observations, I know one can live with that without problem, however, at least the page loading and login problem I would like to have somebody look after. I suffered that for a nearly a month or more, then it got better, but now I fear the direction inverted. Men@work or other problems going on I do not know.
Cheers.

try (i don’t know if it will help your situation or not) deleting all cookies for opensuse.org, novell.com, suse.de then, shut down and restart FF…

as for the naughty emoticon: to test i will type a sentence after manually inserting the said nasty

<:)

right here <:) and then i’ll just keep typing a bit.

can you see this?

i can see it, so maybe there is a -problem’ with your firefox 3.6.26,

maybe consider upgrading to 10, or what is your FF setting for character
encoding? (mine is UTF-8)

btw: i have no idea how many emoticons an nntp poster can have, count
yourself:

<:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:) <:)

O.K. Apparetly the html application has some issue. What you see as my last post is what came out trying to post your post with a quoted reply. All my text was discarded AND whatever where your emoticons and your text where discarded too. This is reproducible.
So here another try. Still with the latest version of Opera 11.61, as I posted before, but since all was discarded. I will write the famous emoticon, then the sentence, hey what’s up, after it. Just as a proof of concept.

As expected, also in Opera, when using this emoticon with html, with FF 3.6.26 or Opera 11.61 and the mentioned emoticon, the emoticon plus all the text is discarded.
Reproducible always.

what is your FF setting for character encoding? (mine is UTF-8)

and, are you one a dial-up modem? or one of those “wireless modems”…

I am on “Unicode UTF-8”.
I am currently on-line via a G3/UMTS dial-up connection. This problem is identical with Opera too.
If you wish we can try via a virtualized system with the latest FF but I doubt that is the problem. It is only reproducing with that emoticon. the other ones (limited to two per post) are working well.

Edit: you see, text stays, no problem. As soon as you try that other particular emoticon the exeption occurs.

then i guess your modem may be interpreting the emoticons keystrokes
as a command sequence for something it is supposed to do…and, it does
that and so interrupts the browser-to-distant-server link…

you can try typing a forward slash / and then with no space click that
emoticon’s icon in the forums selection (or is in the selection? if not
just type /<:) and see what happens…

it that doesn’t work, then maybe backslash will ‘escape’ the first
character, so try <

there are others keyboard strokes which will upset some modems…

you might look though the documentation of your dialup hardware or maybe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_command_set and, if lucky you might
spot what command your modem thinks you are sending…

some (many/most/all?) modems have pre-connect setup strings which can be
used to change factory pre-sets…that is, if there is a factory
pre-set which includes those three characters in that order, you could
override the pre-set and then be able to use those three strokes without
upsetting the modem…

FYI, I have still problems with the login. Today I got this fancy error message:
https://login.novell.com/nidp/images/error_icon.gif ** Errore:NIDPMAIN.11401A91AC92C05A946F382E5FAE9239F5C (NIDPLOGGING.300101048) **

So maybe there is still to be looked after this.
Greets.

i never saw the results of after: "try …deleting all cookies for
opensuse.org, novell.com, suse.de then, shut down and restart FF…(from
my first post in this thread…)

Oh, I already did shut down FF before. It is regulated to “clean whatever” is on the browser. Always starting virgin. Eehem, let’s say…kind of
In fact, this time no error message. And after the first error message I was able to login too. Without doing anything…admit it, you did free some gremlin, did ya? Gave him food and water after midnight??? DenverD, you shouldn’t have, you know that…
