openSUSE 12.1 - no audio from apps but have audio from "test" in Yast

Problem: Audio is audible when using “Test” from Yast->Sound->Other->Play Test Sound. No audible audio when using apps or the command line test (aplay - see results below)

  • Things I have done:

Tried pulse audio on and off

Removed cards from configuration and re-configed.

      Added models to card configuration

      Set all volumes to 100%

Running pavucontrol shows NO available cards under Configuration tab. Only Output Device is “Dummy Output”. Playback tab shows System Sounds only

Audio is heard through speakers when “Test” under Sound is run. [In other words, it works correctly.]

Command line test output (aplay). Nothing audible.*

As usual, after hours of trial and error, audio is now fixed - 20 minutes after posting this.:shame:

Unfortunately, I don’t know which change - or combination of changes - fixed it. If I can determine what worked without undoing a working system, I will post it here.

Glad to read its working. I’m wondering if either (1) a reboot or (2) adding your regular user to group audio was the fix …

I have the exact same problem.

Please explain what you did?
I bet there are a few other people with the same problem as well

In short the sound test in YaST works but only “Dummy Output” is enabled / available in System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon.
Also some times when you open that up it says that KDE detected that you removed hardware would you like KDE to forget about them?

Here is my system’s details:

Hope to get this resolved soon.

IMHO tell KDE to forget them …

Reference test sound working in YaST but not elsewhere, that suggests a permissions problem.

Having a “dummy sound” , thats also probably because your sound card is not configured yet. If it is not configured, then a dummy device may be created by pulse audio as a temporary measure so pulse won’t crash (thats me speculating).

Try this : Go to YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management > select your user name > select EDIT > select DETAILS and under ‘additional groups’ select ‘audio’ to add your user to the ‘audio’ group (nominally that should not be necessary but if there is a permissions problem it will solve things). Then click on the OK, exit YaST, and restart and test.

Also note, if you have been occasionally logging in to your desktop with root permissions (which is a MAJOR NO NO) you could have messed up your permissions and could be bring this sound problem about now for regular users.

lol, I just wanted to post that it was the permission when I saw your post.

Added myself to the audio group, logged out, logged in.
Went to System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon, configured my sound correctly, adjusted the mixer and voila, the phonon sound test worked.

Thanks

same problem as above
added myself to audio group -> rebooted and started listening to Pristine Classical!
Additional information: did not do a clean installation. used system update option (with openSUSE DVD) from previous openSUSE 11.4 system

thanks, if you hadn’t pointed out ‘(1) and (2)’ i would have missed the solution for me…
Number 2 (two)…

I had to ‘re-install’ system after I lost mouse and keyboard after an update the other day…
su (root) had sound, but not my user…
User was member of group ‘dial-out’… go figure…

Thanks (Спасибо),
Landis.
p.s. dvanzandt… very nice and complete description of what’s going on with you… nice.

I upgraded with DVD from 11.4 to 12.1, and same problem. Must be a bug on upgrading. After I added my user to audio group and rebooted, my sound card appeared again.

Now I must fight to get XBMC to run, despite I installed official ATI drivers, on OpenSUSE 12.1 XBMC tell me that “Needs hardware accelerated OpenGL renderring” … so, what in the hell have I now activated if not that???

Best regards

If you wish XBMC help, you really need to start a new thread with XBMC in the thread subject.

How many XBMC experts do you think you will get to chime in with a subject “openSUSE - no audio from apps but have audio from “test” in YaST” ? None - that’s how many.

So please start a new thread.

I have a similar issue and I don’t think it has to do with permissions. I have audio on non KDE applications, for example seeing a video with totem or youtube on firefox or chromium, but any KDE application hasn’t any sound. The curious thing is that the sound test on System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon->Devices works !!

Seeing the comments on this thread I added my self to the audio group in YaST but as I suspected it didn’t help. Also I’m not using pulse.

Can you check your phonon audio backened, if it xine try changing it to gstreamer.
If gstreamer is not an option install it.
Take a look also if kmix is muted.
Try to install the pavucontrol, when you play audio using kde application
If everything goes right it will show in the pavucontrol.

Edit.
Take note that I didn’t read the previous posts and I am just replying to your post.

I’m using gstreamer.

It isn’t muted, it’s all up and I have sound in other non-KDE applications. alsamixer also shows all levels of playback at maximum.

As I said before, I’m not using pulse audio, so this tool doesn’t work on this case.

Ok, I apologize for overlooking the pulse part.
If you are not using pulse, be sure pulseaudio is not enable in yast2-sound.
You have to configure the sound in yast2 at least but maybe you probably have done that.
If you are not using pulseaudio you might as well try xine in phonon.

Edit:
I think this is best to make a new thread as it is not really similar from the
OP problem.

Done, you can find it here.
