Making VLC default player

Just upgraded to 11.4 and am at bottom of learning curve again. With previous system (11.2) vlc was default application for videos. Now it is Kaffeine. How can I set default back to VLC please?

thanks, nice pointer…sadly it doesn’t offer any relief for KDE users…

If it’s compatible with Free Desktop standards, then it should work…

You can right click and change the default player in KDE

yes, but as far as i can see you have to do that for each file type,
which is a lot of right clicking…

or, if you know the KDE path to follow to one click make VLC the default
video and audio player for all (mp2, mp4, mpeg, oog, etc etc etc)
please tell me…

tia

maybe you and i are not communicating clearly:

VLC works perfectly…

the problem is that when a (for example) *.mp4 file is clicked it will
open NOT with VLC, but instead with Amarok…

and, a webm opens with Kaffine…

and another file type may open with something else…

and the subject of this thread is how to make VLC the default
player…for all the file types it can play…

(just like if you make Firefox the default browser, you would not expect
it to only open .html files but also .htm, .asp, .php, etc etc etc)

see?

Not easy but one could try this:
Easily Set VLC as Default for All Video Types?

I never said it didn’t… like the link I posted mentions, if you associate all the mimetypes with VLC then it becomes the preferred one for those mimetimes (and those files are standardized from Free Desktop).

There seems to be a discussion going on about dynamic update.

Have a way to dynamically change software associations at distribution level

But at present it seems mime type association is hard coded. We need to edit and change the files. The InitialPreference key seems to be used to give priority to applications. I dont use much KDE, but sure it will be there somewhere.

I had the same problem when when I right clicked on the file and went “open with > other application” Instead I just right clicked on the file and chose properties and then changed it on the “open with” tab

Only the second option will make the change permanent

and, it has to be done individually for each file type.

Hi and thanks for putting it so clearly. Exactly what I wanted with my original post.
Seems like the KDE folk are getting to be as parochial as the folk who make that other OS! Time to change to Gnome perhaps

I agree with you. I prefer GNOME to KDE. I found GNOME is easier to use.

Hi, I am still stuck with this. If I right click on the file and chose properties how do I then get an “open with” option. All I get are the three propertyies tabs, General, Permissions and Information. No sign there of open with option that I can see.
Please could you give more explicit info. What you suggest would be a reasonable compromise. I may just have to un-install Amarok but don’t want to do that yet in case I break KDE still further.

I know the tab appears with Gnome. Not quite sure with KDE. Have you tried different file types. It wouldn’t be the program but you could uninstalling. (Werid things happen).

Did you try to set the file associations in system-settings? It seemed to work for this user here.

Oops. It’s the same OP, double-posting. Apparently the s/he never heard about bumping a thread.

This is really annoying that you can’t set VLC as default for every media type (audio and video).

I use this workaround: uninstall amarok and kaffeine.
After that VLC becomes default player
