    Default canon lbp2900 problem

    Hi all,

I am very new to linux.

A week ago I installed ubuntu but could not install my printer canon lbp2900
Than I was advised to install Fedora, but still cannot install my printer...
I was following all the instructions given in this site: http://sunscreen.blog.com/2010/03/31...on-ubuntu-910/, but without success

Now I am searching for linux distro which doesnot have a problem with hardware instalations.

Is openSuse such type of distro?

I am used to use XP... Next--> Next-->...-> Finish...
I am looking for such an OS...
So, with xp, I opened google search, and wrote there install lbp2900, and in 5 minutes i was printing...

One general comment - it needs not always be correct but most often. If your
printer is not working with two other distros, the chances are very low that
it will work with the third one. It is then most likely a general problem
that the manufacturer does not provide suitable drivers for linux or
suitable information so that the free software developers can write one on
    their own.
If it worked in the past with linux and now no longer can easily happen if
Canon drops support for some printers for linux (but still supports
    windows).
On my personal side I moved to HP years ago because they support linux (the
same is true for other manufacturers), Canon seems to be well known for
    their really bad linux support.

    Now back to your problem:
The link you gave provides a detailed step by step guide. You simply tell
"it did not work", that does not help to find your problem.
Please describe what happened in which step while following the guide, if
you did something which differs or not and at what step something went wrong
at what the details of the step where it went wrong are.

So, when I was trying to print the page, in the status printer was online, but was not printing anything...
In other forums, everybody were talking about canon, that they dont like linux and saying change the printer
But I do not like to buy another printer, its better for me to have slow computer with xp and to print out what i need...

The question is reversal in my case: I have pc (p4, 3ghz, 512mb ram, 80gb hdd) and printer canon lbp 2900.
I want linux becaus xp runs slowly, but I want linux which would alow me to print from my printer...
I do not like to buy HP printer

I did not say "buy a new printer and throw your old out of the window". ;-)
I just explained why people like me buy something else but canon.

To help you we need the details I asked you for. What did you do exactly
from the Sunscreen Blog? What failed.
How did you check that the driver is active, did you check the status in
    CUPS?
    Please provide details.

Hi giorgi81. I remember helping another user get a CANON LBP3100 working. It was a challenge, but if you read this thread, we got there in the end. In post #9, I assisted by installing the required Canon software and configuring via the CUPS web interface (even though I don't own a Canon printer). Hope this works for you.

I have installed back my xp...
I was trying to fix the problem with printer during 1 week, but couldnot...
Colleague from other forum using remote desktop connection tryed to fix the problem but he couldnot...

I do not know what failed, I am not so advanced user to figure out this...
I am typical xp user, i know next-->next-->...-->finish. fortunately in xp this works...

So, I guess I will have the problem with printer if i install opensuse...
I need very simple system, similar to xp, which will speed up my old pc (i baught it in 2005)

I found a german post in a different forum which states that the printer
will work with that with openSUSE
    http://www.unixmen.com/hardware-linu...p2900-on-linux
It does not tell which openSUSE version was used and the post is from 2009.
    I would just try it.

Rereading your first post it seems you do not have openSUSE installed. I
would download a live cd and test with the link I gave you if you can print
that way from the live cd to your printer.
As far as I see it should be possible to test it without installing the
    system.

Thats a shame. I'm sure that Martin or myself could have assisted you with this, but one needs a little patience and perseverance. (I only just caught this thread). When you are ready, maybe you'll find time to try again.

(FWIW, it looks like you had the incorrect device URI. It needed to be something like ccp:/var/ccpd/fifo0)
