    Default Packman Layout Explained

    Packman Layout Explained

We are going to attempt to explain the new packman repository layout.
    Some things you should know:

    • Packman is a complete source of multimedia (except libdvdcss)
    • It can now be divided in 4 sections or more typically added as one complete repo
      • The divisions if you want to use Packman that way, are:
        • Essentials
        • Extra
        • Games
        • Multimedia

    • Packman is mirrored in different locations. You can see more about that here:

    Multimedia Playback
There are established practices and accompanying guides for setting up Multimedia Playback. Here:

    Packman
[PackMan :: Startseite Packman] offers various additional packages for openSUSE. It's the largest openSUSE external repository.

says we can add any of, or all four sections of repos for:

    essentials
    extras
    games
    multimedia

but, for 11.4 i see only
    complete
    essentials
(no games, no multimedia, no extras) ??

    for 11.3 i see only
    complete
    essentials
    extras|misc
(no games no multimedia, but something called misc)

and, 11.2 has none of those four sections

also, what i don't see is, what is the URL which goes through
mirrorbrain for 11.3 Packman complete software (ok, i see i can select
from sites in Austria, Germany, Romania and the USA...but, do i _have_
    to pick which site?)..

    oh, i see a "Packman:Startsite" <http://packman.links2linux.de/>, is
that the address that goes through the brain? if so, how do i make
sure it never draws anything from the 'factory'?

wait, i just tried to load packman.links2linux.de into YaST and barfed..

will 11.4 be born knowing the URL for all four sections of packman?

and, will the address for all four sections for 11.3 be available in
this thread, or on the Wiki, or where? (and when?)

    Very nice!

    One suggestion:

Avoid tinyurls, it makes hard reading and difficult pasting into yast, one
    extra step to expand it.

heh! the problem is (i _think_) that the wonderful webforum software
automatically (when it sees a URL) converts the YaST usable URL into a
    non-YaST usabel tinyurl..

    cool huh?

As I noted before, I find that layout - well - sorry, but I find it confusing. If Packman is going to be split up into different sub repositories, which it is, then IMHO we should stay consistent with the list of all other repositories, and list them accordingly ... ie something like:

    Packman - overall
    • Factory - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.4 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.3 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.2 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.1 Evergreen - Germany USA

    Packman - Essential
    • Factory - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.4 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.3 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.2 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.1 Evergreen - Germany USA

    Packman - Extra
    • Version-11.4 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.3 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA
    • Version-11.2 - Austria Germany Germany Germany Germany Germany Romania USA

I just made the above 'up' without looking at precise links, so it would need to be tuned.

I confess anything else just confuses me. Can't we be consistent with how this was laid out before?

    Sure. If you like.

I was working with Martin Seidler on this. He can sign off on alteration to that wiki page

    I know...

    > cool huh?

    Indeed!

There should be a button or option to deactivate tinies.

I have to agree here, I prefer this version i.e. consistent with the normal repo listing.

I agree with Oldcpu. It would also help if there were an indication of why anyone would want to have a repo split into different divisions. What is the benefit to the user?
We have been encouraged to limit the number of active repo sites to four, or now five with the addition of the dedicated libdvdcss site. Why now complicate matters and how will that influence the already complicated process of getting multimedia to work properly? OK I know there is now one click install but if one is trying to learn about the wonders of Linux, this is not instructive. Great to use if all works well but if not ...?
