Default Forum nntp server, and links not working

    Hi,

rereading the FAQ, I notice that the NNTP server is given as
forums.opensuse.org, but looking at my configuration, I'm using
forums.novell.com. Are they the same? I could change, but the indexing
would be rebuilt and I would loose all my markings.

Another thing: the FAQ says the nntp test link is this one:

which does not exist. I think that all existing links to old threads are
    broken. The current one is:

IMO, you should create redirects in the web server so that old links keep
working. They can be redirected with a delay notice.

    same? i do not know...but, i'm pointing to forums.opensuse.org, i
think i recall before the big switch in 2008 when they combined three
fora together into this one, i was nntping to forums.novell.com

what is the utility in keeping three year old nntp test posts?

The IP is different, but they must be syncing the content, I guess. The question is rather if I
really should change or it doesn't matter.

That's not the point I was making.

The link is the same one for old and new test posts. It is a pointer to a thread; but as the forum
web pages have been reorganized, existing links in many places were broken - including this one of
    the FAQ.

This is different from the creation of a new nntp test thread; the FAQ should be updated to point to
the old but corrected link, or to the new link. Currently it is pointing to a broken link that tells
the user to contact the administrator to report the error.

i can't answer that...maybe Kim or Jim can..

    > That's not the point I was making.

ok, but what is the benefit of listing a URL to the web side's echo of
    an nntp posting?

i can't use that to address an nntp post? can you?

what i do now is (in the nntp client) sort the subject lines on 'nntp'
and pick the test thread to post to---without looking at the
faq....imHo the FAQ need only to list the forum, using the nntp
    addressing, like "opensuse.org.no-support.general-chit-chat"..

or have i got it all balled up?

    Good point :-)

    No, you haven't X'-)

However, when I came here first time, I did at that thread on the web side.
Later, I did what you say in the nntp side. And after posting, I looked
again at the web side of things, to see if was getting out.

Yes, they are the same server.

They're actually not the same physical server. They are two different NNTP servers with a Cyclone router behind them keeping them in sync. We had the option of making one specifically for the Novell forums and one for the openSUSE forums but then we would not have a hot standby for either. We decided to put all forums on both boxes and keep them in sync so if one fails, you go to to the other and still get the content, and when the bad server is repaired, we can just sync it up with the other server and be back in business. Hope we never have to put that into practice, but that's the reasoning behind it.

Good to know, I wasn't aware we were operating that way. I mean, I knew
about the cluster, but didn't know one was primary for one set of forums,
and the other was primary for the other. :-)

That makes a lot of sense.
