Thread: .torrent files won't open with utorrent

Default .torrent files won't open with utorrent

I have utorrent running on wine without issue. I click on the utorrent.exe and it opens and runs great. My problem is that even after setting .torrent files to open with utorrent (instead of transmission which is the defualt) and then try to open them NOTHING happens. I have to go into utorrent and open the torrent files. This is kind of a pain in the butt cause I want to be able to download and run them from my browser so after the download is finished it gets loaded into utorrent. Is there something I'm missing?

Windows Linux Windows Linux. Note the difference. You can not use one of the fine torrent programs that are written for native Linux??

Sorry, cannot help but just a question. What is the benefit in using
utorrent via wine instead of a native linux torrent (like ktorrent from
    packman)?

What exactly did you do to make it the default program for torrent files and
does this work if you click on a torrent file stored localy to be sure that
    it works as you expect?
Which browser do you use and which desktop?
Probably you simply made an error in the definition assigning it as default
program which can be easily fixed.

Hey thanks for the quick responses. To be honest I just prefer utorrent. I like the way its organized and how easy it is to tell it where to put finished .torrent files vs currently downloading ones as well as the downloads themselves. I know this is probably doable in transmission, but I want to use this program and try out wine.

Regardless of my torrent client preference I think this has something to do with the way I'm using wine? I went to the properties of one of the torrent files and from there changed it to "open with" utorrent. When I try to run the file nothing happens- though I can open it with transmission. So I cant even file browse to it and open it. I still have to load the torrent files from inside utorrent.

I'm using gnome- whatever version that was packaged with 11.2 x64

I guess the following happens: You click the file on the linux file system
which starts your windows program via wine with a parameter which tells it
the location in the linux file system. The application in wine does not know
what this means in terms of the windows file structure simulated in wine and
simply can not find your .torrent file.
If you love utorrent so much, you can install a windows version of a browser
in wine and run that browser to download or open the torrent files.

But I guess you see that slowly (or quickly) this gets messy.

Trnasmission is not the only torrent client for linux, if you don't like it
    simply chhose another one.

ktorrent for example (it is an kde application but runs of course with gnome
and has a very nice interface, choose the version from packman repository).

As far as I know, wine maps the linux file system as Z:
So wine should be able to find the .torrent file. I know because I've had stuff open with a wine version of firefox or internet explorer before. I would know how to get this working in KDE but not in Gnome. But it should be able to work since the site actually lists wine as one of the system requirements.

    Take Care,

Well this isn't a huge issue, but I plan to use wine with some other software and maybe this will be problem for me again. If this "should" work could someone point me in the right direction as to a possible solution?
