  1. #1

Default Google released Linux video chat plugin for Gmail

Voice and video chat for Linux supports Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distributions, and RPM support will be coming soon.
Use Linux? Now you can video chat too - Official Gmail Blog

    Still no RPM.

RPMs are on the way. I suppose some impatient poweruser can extract the DEB and do something.

Tried building the rpm with 'alien' from the .deb, it builds but there's some dependency problems with libcrypto and libssl. Let's wait for the rpms.

I managed to get it installed (sort of) with this process:
    1. Extract the DEB contents to a local directory using Ark.
    2. Install the glew package, which I figured out I needed by looking at the DEB's control file. (I think I have all the other dependencies already installed. Your mileage my vary.)
    3. Copy the /opt directory contents from the DEB into my own /opt directory as root.
    4. Create two symlinks in my local ~/.mozilla/plugins folder that point to libnpgoogletalk.so and libnpgtpo3dautoplugin.so in the /opt directory. You might need to create the plugins folder yourself if it doesn't exist.

Once I did this I can get Google Talk to appear in the "about:plugins" URL of Firefox. (If it crashes, it probably means you're missing a dependency.) Unfortunately, though, when I try to make a call from Gmail, it doesn't seem to recognize that the plugin is there. It keeps asking me to download it and won't go any further.

    Anyone else have better luck?

Maybe it needs an entry in pluginreg.dat in your .mozilla folder? Don't have time to look at it right now but you might check the unpacked deb files to see if there's a pluginreg.dat file there with the proper entries....just a guess...
