Hey guys, I apologize for posting this in the Install/Boot/Login forum, but I couldn’t figure out where to post this.
Anyways my question is that all of a sudden my opensuse has become very laggy. Everything loads up very slowly and then it takes a while for it to respond to my commands. However, when I boot up in FAILSAFE mode then everything runs beautifully. It boots up fast, all my programs load up fast, and everything is super responsive. Any idea as to what may of caused this and as to how I can fix it? Oh, I am dual booting Win 7 Home, and I also have the 64-bit edition of OpenSuse, btw.
What does ‘top’ show from the command line? Which application(s) is/are
on top all of the time when watching the CPU (default sort has high
CPU-users on top)?

Was it laggy at the time? Nothing looks too odd in there. I have no idea
what some of the processes are but I presume that’s because of my relative
lack of KDE knowledge (keysguard, keysguardd, kwin) and none of those are
taking much processing time, but nothing is really showing up here. Does
the ‘uptime’ command show anything useful? You can just paste its output
in here since there is only one line.
When did this start? Did you install something around that time? If you
did install something by RPM you could check the history seeing RPMs
installed (in reverse order) using the following command (piped to ‘less’
for simplicity):
rpm -qa --last | less

it wasn’t super laggy, but it was laggy. I installed a few updates through the updater applet if perhaps that could be causing it? This has been going on for about the last 4-5 days now
I suspect npviewer.bin. It’s used by firefox to display media (flash, I think). It can hog X (which is going at 40%+).
Usually exiting firefox solves it. Updating firefox is a good idea too.
If running KDE, the OP could install the system monitor applet, that shows CPU usage in the panel. This way s/he could see when the CPU is running full and check top to see the what’s the gluttony application.
Did you install the propitiatory ATI driver?
If not the problem may be in the radeon or radeonhd driver. The radeonhd in particular seems to be problamtic
I believe that the failsafe will use the vesa driver
I don’t think I’ve installed that. I haven’t installed anything after whatever was installed by the OpenSuse installer other than the updates the updater applet has told me to install and the gcc compiler. Where can I get the radeonhd driver?
Wow you guys were right, it was my graphics card that was messing things up. Idk how I did it, but I somehow got the driver installed (by following this: ATI Installer HOWTO for SUSE/Novell users) anyways my opensuse is running a-okay again and my driver reads : “fglrx” instead of “unknown” now! If everything I posted is what it should be, then thank you all for your help!!!
Hey guys, I have an ASUS Eee 1000HA (with intel atom) and i’m having the exact same issue. Especially with firefox, its so laggy even scrolling is unresponsively slow, like down syndrome. What are my options? Are there specific drivers i should download for the intel atom? And how do i get them?
From the top command it’s seen that Xorg takes more than 40% of CPU.
It happens to me too. Being on 11.2 and KDE 4.4.3. I have NVidia drivers (for GeForce 7300 LE) and I’ve turned off desktop effects (otherwise it’s laggy all the time), I don’t use Firefox, but Chrome and Rekonq instead. Chrome’s flash is dead slow, so occasionally I start Firefox to see some video online.

So about 3 times a day I have to logout from KDE and log back in, otherwise the system goes to a state where I can’t even go to command line to kill Xorg. Sometimes if I just don’t do anything when the lagging starts, Xorg gets over with himself with about 5 minutes and then I can breathe again.
