I am trying to “fix” an aspire one computer, and it is not going well.
I have installed OpenSUSE 11.2 from a usb. I plugged a LAN-connection to get all updates and followed the guide on Acer Aspire One - openSUSE
The wireless would still not work. I then downloaded some “acer aspire one patches” but I have removed these again as they did not help. Also I downloaded the “broadcom-wl”. Nothing seems to work.
The computer can find the wireless connection which is secured with WPA. But when I try to connect it just says “receiving network address” (or something familiar) and stops.
There are two more problems with the computer:
right clicking does not seem to work anymore?
when starting the computer, it freezes and I can only move on by logging off and on again.
I have searched on your forums and on google, and all my problems seem to be well known. Though I have not found any solutions yet.
Rather than use DHCP. Set a number range of LAN IP’s for the WLAN and assign each connecting device an IP on thr LAN and If you allow access by MAC access control. This will help secure your network.
Ah okay, that might explain why my own laptop (from the 20th century) have to get an ip assigned manually as well. Anyway, it is my sister’s computer, so i’ll just tell her not to encrypt their network Thanks!
But what about the right clicking and the freezing? When it freezes it sometimes pops up with a crash-report-window but obviously I can’t copy that.
As what I can remember I have downloaded some packages named:
acerfand
acerhk-kmp (desktop, debug, xen, default, pae)
aspireone-main-settings
aspireone-main-settings-s2ram
acer aspire one main confg ram2
But I have removed all of them again. Likewise I have edited the etc/sysctl.conf according to the guide mentioned in my first post.
Just ignore my previous post (well most of it). I decided to install opensuse again (still kde) - formatting the old installation. The network works, but it still freezes after startup, and the right-clicking is still disabled somehow.
And this time I installed only the recommended updates. The problems seemed to be there at first startup though. I remember that last time I installed opensuse I could use the right-click.
Yes I am using a touchpad, and I have not yet tried a mouse. “Freezing” might be a wrong word though, as I’ve found out that the computer is only slowed down quite much and that the mouseclicks is somehow “paralyzed”. I can move the mouse as much as I want, but the leftclick works only 1-2 times and then it’s gone. Logging off and on seems to correct everything except rightclicking. At startup the computer logs on automaticly.
Okay, I tried to use an USB-mouse, and guess what. Everything seems to work just fine with the usb-mouse after startup. However, if I use the touchpad after startup, the problem appears again. And clicking with the usb-mouse does not help either by then. After logging off and on, I can right click with the usb-mouse again - and both “mices” are not “paralysed” anymore. But the right click does still not work on the touchpad.
Yes I’ve read that. “openSUSE release: 11.1” does this mean, that 11.2 is not supported or is the page just outdated/has the computer not yet been tested with the newest release?
Can’t the problem be something with the configuration/driver/firmware of the touchpad?
It basically means no one has filled in any info there yet. It’s user dependant is the HCL.
I don’t really have an answer for you. Personally I would probably mess about with it for hours just experimenting with different versions, different desktops and even different Distro’s.
I have now installed ubuntu netbook remix instead, but the problem is still there. Not quite the same though. Enabling and using the touchpad will cause that I can click on things on the desktop/quick menu, but after that I can’t do anything except moving the cursor. Closing the window with ALT F4 cause the touchpad to work again - but only at the same “level” as before. The usb-mouse is affected by this as well, so I can not do anything but restart.
Right clicking is still disabled on the touchpad too.
I installed something called gsynaptics, but this dit not work. (followed a guide, so I assume I didn’t do anything wrong)
I have also read at Synaptics own website that no official drivers are made and that the touchpad will work as a normal mouse - obviously it does not.
Unless you get feedback form someone else with the same machine it’s difficult to say, but if it were hardware, even windows would behave that way.
The report in the HCL here in openSUSE was for 11.1
Would it be worth trying? Grab a Gnome live CD and try it (I say gnome because you will get a better deal with that in 11.1)
To install Wifi in a Aspire One you must do two things:
One -> use the command “install_bcm43xx_firmware” pluging your lappy to a wired connection. That will download automatically the firmware.
Second → compile and install “compat-wireless” package. Wich is simple, just install the pattern “Kernel Development” in YaST and then download from Download - Linux Wireless … the source code of the package, uncompress then just type “make && make install” and done…
BTW, with compat-wireless your Wifi card will be more powerfull and get a better signal (proved).
