Thread: Gimp default for opening PDF's from Firefox

Default Gimp default for opening PDF's from Firefox

I have firefox 3 and gimp 2.6. For some reason Gimp was assigned as the default program for opening PDF files from firefox and I cannot seem to change it or remove it from the list of programs entirely.

What happens is that I want to normally be asked what I want to do with a PDF file so I can either open it in my default PDF reader (okular) or save it to disk. If I do end up saving it I tend to right-click on the file in the download window and click "open", which used to open it in the default, and only, PDF reader, which is okular. This is even more of an issue in my citation manager plugin, zotero, which will automatically open any PDF in the default program without giving you any option to select a program.

However, after a recent update the default program has been set to Gimp 2.6. There is no situation under which I would want to open a PDF in Gimp directly from firefox. If I go to the firefox preferences and select the "applications" tab, under PDF there are two programs listed: "Gnu Image Manipulation"and "okular". However, if I go to "application details" there is only okular. Gimp is not on the list so I cannot remove it. If I change the setting from "always ask" to "okular" it makes no difference, PDF files are still launched in gimp. I changed my default PDF reader in gnome to Okular (I use KDE, but still have the gnome configuration programs), but this made no difference. I went so far as to search all the files in my firefox profile directory for any mention of "gimp" or "manipulation" but neither turned up anything useful. It is making it extremely hard to work with PDF's since Gimp is simply not a PDF reader, it keeps asking me to convert the PDF into raster images so it can edit them. Is there some way to change the default PDF reader in firefox or to remove Gimp from the list of programs firefox uses to open PDF files? Either would be fine.

Right click on any pdf on you drive. Choose open with > other select okular in the drop menu and check remember choice

Is this a user-based install of Firefox or the one that came with your
system? There are some applications I cannot 'Remove' as a regular user
and I'm guessing it is because those associations are defined in the
system as part of Firefox and, while I can add to that list, my
nobody-user doesn't have rights to manipulate everything system-wide.

With this in mind try running `gnomesu firefox` and see if you can
remove the option once in there for the bad option (GNU Image
Manipulation). If this works close the new root-owned Firefox window
and try your own user again after restarting any copies you had open.

    Good luck.

That didn't fix it, either in dolphin or nautilus. It works fine when opening the program in both dolphin and nautilus, it is only firefox that is having a problem.

I tried that. I can't remove the option even if I open firefox as root.

I don't have a PDF reader plugin installed, I always open PDF files in an external program or save them to disk.

TheBlackCat, try mozplugger. You can set any default application to open any file type in firefox.

Unfortunately its not in the repos. Get rpm from here: mozplugger rpm

Here's a how-to to set a default app for pdf files: mozplugger pdf

I really don't think I should have to install a new piece of software just so I am not forced to use a totally unsuitable program for one specific file format. There has to be a better way. Unless Gimp is specifically hard-coded into firefox, which makes no sense whatsoever and should be fixed, then there must be some way to change it somewhere.

It looks like this isn't only a Suse problem, nor is it only a Gimp problem:

I ended up giving up and uninstalling Gimp entirely. Now it opens in krita. Everything is the same. Why is firefox so obsessed with opening PDF's in image editors instead of PDF viewers?
