Default How to Activate Middle Mouse Button

I apologize if this topic has already been covered.

I have a USB mouse connected to a ThinkPad R61i. How do I activate its middle button (scroll wheel) so firefox will move to a new tab when I click on it? At the present time, I can only scroll web pages with it.
