No surprises there, just wanted to be sure.

Good question and difficult to answer, but maybe try the psychological way.

Just write you also had the idea to try maxcpus=2 in order to see if it gives you that loop, too and you got the expected result.

This shows your involvement in the process and will "push" the thread with some more information, even if it is something quite obvious.

I thought about two other ones first, but they didn't look that good when resized to the maximum the forum allows.

Good idea! I will wait till tomorrow because I have more time then to dedicate to the problem.

I think indeed that both will loose a lot of their impact when on Avatar size. I am also afraid that the pun of "the *** of nine tails" will be lost to a lot of non native english speakers.

It would likely be counter productive. One thing I just noticed is
that the bug is not reported as a regression. It should have been, but
I expect that the person that keeps track of regressions will find it.
Just in case he doesn't, I'll ping him.

When you removed the "splash=silent", it seems that nothing showed on
the console before it crashed back into the BIOS. Is that correct?

Correct, just a black screen until it goes to "monitor sleeping" for half a second, then it shows the HP splash (from the BIOS I guess) and starts booting.

Same as when I put in several other media with a newer kernel (at least newer then 10.3) like: Live CD 11.2 M7 and Install DVD 11.2 RC1. IIRC I had a similar problem with the Install DVD 11.1. I got them loadng all using one of the F5 options on the bootscreen. I know for sure that even that did not help with 11.1 in VM on 10.3.

Uh?

Yours is no a Transmeta CPU, it's an Intel Dual Core :-?

Greetings,

No, that is a line from the list of supported vendor extensions. Of course all of this is confusing when posters only show us half their dmesg because they thought it's smart to run grep or something. If the first line is not "Linux $version_here (geeko@buildhost)" who knows what has been stripped.

As for the linked ub* post, someone obviously seemed to have compiled a kernel with only generic-x86 and Transmeta support.

That is allready understood. When you see the kernel bugzilla (link above) you will see the latest information about this problem. It is now seem as a regression. Hope something comes out of this.

I'm having the exact same problem with a Core 2 Quad CPU. Worked great with Ubuntu and Opensuse 11.1 but not with 11.2.

Trying different kernel modifications to get it working. Need the nolapic flag in grub or I end up with an unbootable system as well.

Looking forward to see if this thread might give me some clues.

Please mvoni99, could you go to Bug 14525 – Second CPU core (Intel) not found, Thinks it is a Transmeta, (register, when you are not registered allready) and add you information to the bugreport. When possible with information about your system (make, type, CPU-type, etc.). That may help them to find the bug in the kernel.

Just wanted to let you know I fixed this problem on my computer by doing a bios flash and using the noapic rather than the nolapic flag in grub

That is nice, but what computer, what BIOS? I have checked the HP web site of my system and there is no BIOS update there. Or do I complete misunderstand what you did (I am not that good in understanding semi hardware things liike flashing BIOSes)?
