What drags it in? compiz doesn't work with KDE4 (at least the window decorator) - so don't install the 'compiz' main package.

I only use kwin's desktop effects. I have never added any packages other than the default kde4 as far as compiz goes anyway.
As you will see from other comment where users have installed kde4 only but have gnome compiz.

What do you mean "Compiz doesn't work with KDE4"? On my work machine, because Kwin kept crashing, I use KDE quite happily with Compiz (and Emerald as the window decorator of course). There are some minor issues but no more than in Kwin...

Thanks for this Stephan. It's clearer now. I deleted all Compiz and kwin is delivering Desktop Effects perfectly. I don't know why but it hadn't registered with me that kwin managed everything independently of compiz.

Good "registration" - no KDE users needs compiz nowadays anymore for nice desktop effects (except for sharks within cubes maybe)
