Thanks for posting these links, oldcpu. I followed the ones that looked most relevant and even edited a pulse file as per instructions, but I'm not sure pulseaudio is even working on my system (the program, pulsaudio isn't installed) and the change in the file didn't change the speed of mp's playing. I'm really stumped on this one, and I'll just have to hope that the problem goes away with RC2.

It now appears that the problem is due to a bug in VirtualBox. Another VB user reported the same problem with a Ubuntu virtual machine, and suggested a temporary fix is to alter the sound settings in VB, reboot and then do the same putting the settings back. This worked for me, and now I have normal mp3/4 playback in openSUSE 11.2 beta; at least at the moment. The other user noted that there is a memory leak in VB 3.0.8 that is supposed to be fixed in the upcoming 3.10 version, so we'll see if that's it.
