rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-desktop-2.6.31-10.1.x86_64
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.31.3-1.1.x86_64
linux-kernel-headers-2.6.31-2.4.noarch
kernel-source-2.6.31.3-1.1.noarch
kernel-debug-devel-2.6.31.3-1.1.x86_64
kernel-default-devel-2.6.31.3-1.1.x86_64
kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.31.3-1.1.x86_64
kernel-syms-2.6.31.3-1.1.x86_64

The way I arrived at these packages is as follows:
1. I deleted everything related to kernel source using YaST.
2. I selected only kernel-syms for installation and I accepted the dependencies, which included kernel-source. Those two packages are requirements for the nvidia installer.
3. The rest of the stuff shown above was determined by YaST to be required.
4. regarding any mismatch of versions, I'm running 11.2-8 still and I have not purposefully done anything to get package versions for RC1. The YaST system seems to work a lot differently than Debian/Ubuntu, but I'm surprised that the default settings would give me mismatched package versions.

Well, some how you have all the kernel packages for RC1 except the kernel-desktop. The nvidia installer won't work until your kernel and kernel-sources match. You can downgrade all of the other packages or just upgrade kernel-desktop.

You get whatever packages are available from the repos you have enabled. Probably when you installed kernel-syms, the repos had been updated since M8. Installing the kernel-syms package won't automatically update the kernel.

Thank you. I was able to update that package. After I rebooted, the nvidia installer ran successfully. I now have the desktop effects enabled Thank you everyone!!!

I told the installer to do its thing with the xorg.conf file (just to make sure things would work as expected). But going back to an earlier point in this thread, can I delete xorg.conf even with this driver?

I'm half-tempted to try it just to see what happens, but I think I'll be patient and wait on some advice first.

I'm starting to get more comfortable with YaST. I am still baffled about the mismatched packages, but fixing it was easy once the problem was pointed out. (I realize it took me a little while to understand what was being said here - thanks for the patience.)

With 11.2, I skip the nvidia-xconfig step and just make sure the nvidia module you built is loaded.

Code:
lsmod
will list all the modules that loaded at boot. I'm sure you'll see nvidia in the list since you have 3d working.

You can delete xorg.conf. If you lose the nvidia module at boot just do:

Code:
modprobe nvidia

I also want to enable desktop effects. (My laptop has an NVidia 570M card.)
Mission accomplished thanks to the help from this forum! Thanks to everyone who helped me.

Desktop effects are working, I removed the xorg.conf file, and my Trackpoint is working perfect too!

I cannot express how pleased I am with openSUSE KDE.

I would like to check to see if these instructions are still the same for 11.2 RC1.

Can the 1-click installer be used now? Or is the "hard way" still applicable for RC1? Thanks.

MountainX,

Caf has done video driver installation "the hard way" of an nVidia driver. One of the places he mentions this is in the thread I did find,it's in the one listed in this post.
On a related subject You were asking about no Monitor & Graphics card. The reason you can't find one is because starting with 11.2 that category has been removed from Yast. there is a thread on it here:
No xorg.conf file - openSUSE Forums
If you do an nvidia driver install the hard way for screen res you'll have 2 options:
1.The nvidia x server settings
Kmenu>Applications>System>Configuration> Configure NVIDIA Xserver Settings
2.Sax2
Kmenu>Applications>System>Configuration>Configure X11 System

PS; Glad to see you stayed I thought one of our members chased you away.
If it hasn't been done yet Welcome to OpenSuSe & its forum.
One more thing Yes for nvidia in RC1 Hard way is still applicable.

Thank you. To tell you the truth, openSUSE 11.2 is such a sweet distro that I am having a hard time not using it.

I don't have any problem with the community either - there are a lot of people here that have been incredibly helpful.

BTW, I have the nvidia driver installed now and it is working. I just wanted to be sure the "hard way" was still the right way.

The Hard Way, has never failed for me Yet!
It's a little bit more work but worth it IMO. Just remember to keep the installer in your /home/loginname*
So it's always there if you need it.

What you do have to keep an eye on is kernel-source, it can be the case that it doesn't update with the kernel (but it depends on how you update your system). Let's say you were scrolling Updates in Software Management and clicked the kernel because it was showing as an update, it will bring in other kernel packages but not kernel-source.
Running online updates or zypper up though should update them all.
