Default Kernel source and Headers do not match

Hi,

Is it just me or everyone's M2 has a mismatch between the kernel source and header files?

This is what I get:

Code:
 linux-2snm:~ # rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-source-2.6.30-4.1
kernel-default-base-2.6.30-4.1
linux-kernel-headers-2.6.29-3.2
kernel-default-extra-2.6.30-4.1
kernel-default-2.6.30-4.1
So how can I get the matching headers? I cannot install Nvidia's drivers, it says it cannot find the 2.6.30-rc6-git3-4 version.h header file.

tnx

If you're using the 2.6.30 kernel, I'm assuming you're using openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2. Things have changed with this release regarding the tools needed to compile from source.

If you will install the kernel-syms package, along with it's dependencies, I believe you will have all the tools you need to install the nvidia drivers.

By the way, the latest kernel from Factory is 2.6.30-6.3.

Hi, yes I have the M2. I will give a shot with the syms and dependencies. Or should I upgrade to 6-3 from Factory... I will try if syms is a no go.

tnx a lot!

Recently updated kernels pae and default using Factory-Oss, from 2.6.30-6.1 to 2.6.30-6.3 (aka 2.6.30-rc8-6-). All installed kernel packages at 2.6.30-6.3, except linux-kernel-headers at 2.6.29-3.11, but it required removal of a preload kernel module (e.g. preload-kmp-default) in both cases to resolve dependencies. You may not have that removal as you are at older release level. No problems on reboot, so far.

Nvidia support was poor in Milestone 1 and just got worse with Milestone 2. Getting things working at an acceptable level has been a real PIA and the Factory repos just made things worse. Compared to this, MythTV and Pacman problems were a walk in the park. For a system that wants to think of itself as a real replacement for Windows on the desktop, SUSE (and Linux in general) still has a long ways to go especially in this area. Here's hoping Milestone 3 does a better job of pulling all the pieces together, especially with the Nvidia support. Yeah, 11.2 is a development release and I should be running 11.1, but broken ethernet controller support in 11.1 prevents me from doing that.

Ok well I have no problem at all installing syms package and all dependencies, if any (I installed other apps at the same time), were listed in the window before installation and everything went like a charm. Tnx for the tip!

Driver works well, though I noticed a complete screen flicker and broking into pieces when switching screen images at the log-on kdm. Last half a second, so no worries.

I will try to make compiz-fusion 3D work, but I doubt in M2 it will, sounds too early, in the past releases it never got supported until RC1.

Which Nvidia drivers are you using? When I tried on Saturday I get an error
message about the kernel. I will have to try again today to get the exact
text of message. I have M2 and I do have the syms rpm installed since that
was my problem getting vbox to install. My headers are also 2.6.29.

Will post results of missing dependence later today.
I'm using the Nvidia 64-bit drivers from the Nvidia website. They work fine
on 11.1 and did install on 11.2 M1, but have not on M2. I have latest
updates to M2, at least as of last Friday..

I think they are the latest, 185-18.14 or something. 64-bits too. For GeForce 8600GT.

Here's the link
Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T)

They installed no issues after updating the syms on M2.

Discovered a bug in nvidia's driver 185-18.14, which I logged at nvidia. Hopefully they will fix it, it's critical. I had data loss.

When the monitor switches off for power consumption reasons, it is not possible to turn it back on! No key on the kbd works, the mouse doesn't do anything as well, everything is completely locked out.

2 ways to get out of this: reset button or power off button.

opensuse devs told me it's nvidia related.
