Default openSUSE-11.2 - CALL FOR TESTERS

This post is a CALL FOR TESTERS of openSUSE-11.2, due to be released in November-2009 ! Its currently in Milestone1.

TEST TEAM:

There is a link here asking for help on our Test Team: Testing Team - openSUSE

There is a desire to create a web app to keep track of what has been tested, and what has not been tested. But its not available yet. So until then, please keep your own notes as to what you test, so that it can be entered into the web app when available. The above openSUSE News on the milestone release, also advise to follow the testing and development process, it is suggested that you join the #openSUSE-Factory channel on Freenode to discuss openSUSE development.

BUGS:

For openSUSE-11.2 milestone bugs, please for the guidance here for entering them: Submitting Bug Reports - openSUSE

... except that is, for KDE bugs. Please follow the guidance here for entering KDE bugs: Bugs:KDE - openSUSE

Please read those pages, and provide the requested logs where needed.

11.2 ROADMAP

The openSUSE-11.2 roadmap is here: Roadmap/11.2 - openSUSE
Please note the new milestone process has replaced the old alpha/beta cycle process.

WE NEED YOUR HELP !

Do you have a favourite openSUSE pet peeve, about a feature that does not work? Jump into the 11.2 milestone process, and help test that feature (or lack there of) and write bug reports to try and influence the distribution the way you believe will help. This is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to influence openSUSE!

Hence for now, please install the latest milestone release. Test your favourite applications. YOU KNOW THOSE APPS BEST !! So test your favourite apps. Test the ones that will make or break your decision to stay with openSUSE. Make note of what works and what does not. And write bug reports and support the testing of the fixes !! We NEED YOU !

We also need your testing NOW !! Now, not later, as the longer you wait to test, the more difficult it will be to get your bug fixes done before the 11.2 release.

USE A SANDBOX PARTITION or PC

My recommendation is users install an openSUSE pre-release on a "sandbox PC". ... ie a spare PC that you don't mind 'trashing' if things go bad. .... or alternatively, if you only have one PC and you have lots of disk space, and if you are reasonably confident of your abilities to work with the "grub boot manager", then create a couple of extra test partitions on your only PC. Keep your current Operating system's partitions. Put the 11.2 / on one new additional partition and the 11.2 /home on another new additional partition. openSUSE-11.2 will share the swap partition with your existing Linux. Then have fun and test away.

Many thanks for your reading of this post!

Note: I wrote this post after discussion with various openSUSE community members on IRC channel #opensuse-projects

Milestone4 has been released! Please read the notification here:
openSUSE News » Ready to Rumble: openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 4 Released

Please feel free to download it, and test it, and write bug reports as applicable.

Please also note there is a separate independant call going on for a "Core Test Team" , who will likely be doing some more organized testing (as opposed to the "adhoc" testing that many of us do on apps/features that are "dear" to us). Please read this thread: Call for openSUSE Core Test Team - openSUSE Forums

Again ...

Milestone5 has been released! Please read the notification here:
http://news.opensuse.org/2009/08/10/...ne-5-released/

Please feel free to download it, and test it, and write bug reports as applicable.

On that page, due note some of the big known bugs in 11.2 milestone-5, such as "kdesu" not working properly, gnome not shutting down properly, the x86_64 DVD being too big to burn to a singled sided DVD, and X having problems with some video drivers (vesa/intel) and also with virtual box (and other). ...

Please also note there is a separate independant call going on for a "Core Test Team" , who will likely be doing some more organized testing (as opposed to the "adhoc" testing that many of us do on apps/features that are "dear" to us).
