I agree, it is a fail. I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. I had auto login enabled which led me to uninstall and revert back to 4.13. But after finding this thread I see that in 4.2 beta2 there is a bug with auto login, so that is disabled for now.

++BTW...how come in my User and Group Administration>>Expert Options...I don't have the "Disable Auto Login?" Instead it is "Login Settings." Another thing I had to search for to get back because that was missing.

+++How come when I login as a user, I don't have the 4.2 beta2 blue bubble background and skinny taskbar with small icons? Instead, I have the green suse with a turquoise taskbar with the bigger icons???

...If I log in as "root" I do get the blue bubble background with skinny taskbar.

So what do I log in as, root or user (I have set up)???

This whole thing is pissing me off

You probably need to delete your /home/<username>/.kde folder (as root).

With autologin off it is also working on my netbook.
Has someone reported this bug to bugzilla?
This bug seems only to appear with nvidia cards, am I right?

I have an Acer travelmate laptop with a bluetooth USB dongle. I tried unsuccessfuly to connect a MS BT 5000 mouse. It worked a treat with 11.0/KDE3, but not now with 11.1/KDE3 (nor KDE4).

Which one do I delete? I have .kde and .kde4??

And will this procedure make it so I can have auto login back with 4.2 beta2? I use my computer 99% of the time which is at home. If someone else needs to use it I just let them. If we leave, then I just lock it, or log out to the login screen.

Thanks

For Auto-Login, go to Yast2 --> Security and Users --> User and Group Management --> [select your user] --> Expert Options (button on the lower right) --> Login Settings.

I suppose that could be more prominently placed...

I think you only have to delete .kde4. Note that this will delete any wallpapers and themes and such that you downloaded (via the built in KDE4 "new stuff" browser). If you are going from KDE 4.1.3 to 4.2, I recommend deleting that folder. A lot of inconsistencies can result from the upgrade otherwise.

Note that if you want to enable Auto Login, and if it's still not working with KDE 4.2 (that may change so you might try it out first), you can install and enable KDE3's KDM. Then Auto Login works fine, and it still lets you login to KDE 4.2 (both KDM's use the same auto login settings).

Install kdebase3-kdm via yast2, then go to Yast2 --> System --> /etc/sysconfig --> [in sidebar] Desktop --> Display Manager --> [select DISPLAYMANAGER entry] --> [in main window] Edit the setting Field to read "kdm3". Hit OK and save your changes, and your done.

My two cents...

I have just installed 4.2.87 unstable, and works mostly ok. One issue I am having is that sometime freezes when adding widgets. My 1st few hours seems very very nice.

Thanks, this worked for the auto login but now I don't have sound. Sound did work in KDM4, even better than the original install. With the original, the sound would stutter on startup.

Man, I realize this is beta. But it shouldn't be this hard. LOL
