Default Building a distro

I am looking to build a stripped down distro with a real time kernel. I can't find any docs that really describe how to build a distro from the ground up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Mike

That is how I am currently doing things. I want to start
from the ground up rather than from a working distro. I was
hoping that the 1.5 release of the build service would enable
this.
