Exclamation KDE4.3.* Upgrade - HowTo

KDE 4.3.* HowTo for openSUSE 11.1

openSUSE 11.1 was shipped with kde 4.1.3 and owing to certain inadequacies in 4.1.3, additional repositories were added to the Build Service to enable a safe Upgrade to 4.2.*. A HowTo was provided for that: KDE4.2.* (How To Add) Guide. - openSUSE Forums
However kde4.2 has been removed from the repo's now.
The principles in that guide, apply much the same for adding kde 4.3.*
KDE4.3.1 is now a official KDE release and will be officially part of openSUSE 11.2. For 11.1 there is now a Stable Build Service directory structure.

For Stable KDE4.3.1 add these:

Desktop:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1

Community:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE4_STABLE_Desktop

If You Already Use 4.2.*
Simply turn off the 4.2.* (42') repositories. Add the repositories above and do an Unconditional Update in the newly added Desktop and Community repositories respectively.

Things to Consider.
*Learn how to use Software Management – Filter by Repositories. And then using the options from the 'Package' menu button: Update all in this list (If newer version available) or (Unconditionally).
*If you have a mine field of repositories, consider just leaving OSS, NON-OSS, UPDATES and KDE repo's enabled for this upgrade.

You may have to delete some packages eg: kde4-dolphin - why?:
The kde4 prefix has been dropped in most cases. This prefixed all package names and was part of the transition from kde3. See info here: KDE4 Name Changes - Making the transition - HowTo - openSUSE Forums
Look through the repository filter 'System'. Check any packages that show as Red and in the version tab. This will reveal if you still have old 4.1.3 or even 4.2.* packages which had the kde4 prefix. A quick check and you will see that the prefix has been dropped and kde4-dolphin is now just dolphin.

Repository priority:
OSS, NON-OSS both at 120
All the rest at 99
This was explained in the .4.2.* HowTo.

EDIT
I have made a short clip of Unconditional Update in Yast Software Management. You can download it here (4.4MB): carl4926 - Unconditional Update in Yast Software management

EDIT+
As of September 2009, now KDE4.3.1
Also look out for kaffeine and k3b - these packages have been added to the kde4 factory repo and will update from that repo if you allow it. BUT you don't want these packages from kde4, you need to use the Packman versions. The correct choice when asked is: "Do Not Install blah...blah... version #...". If in doubt check the 'Version Tab' to what you are using and that the radio button is showing from Packman.

Nice one, thanks again caf. Is the factory version stable enough to use in place of 4.2 or is it still going through "rough" patches? I'm guessing the latter.

Bah! Thanks, now I'm going to have to try it.

I've been trying hard to ween myself of updating and messing around, but this is too tempting .

Unless you like your task bar on the side of the screen and have more than
four desktops. "Pager Settings" control got broken in RC3.

I've also got invisible icons in the Sys-tray but, unlike the above problem,
they seem limited to one machine and 11.2.

Hi caf,

I did a fresh install of 11.1 with default KDE4.1
Do you think to upgrade it to KDE4.3 it is essential to upgrade to 4.2 first? Why cant I directly upgrade directly to 4.3?
I hope yast can resolve the dependencies. I've moved from Debian so I don't know much about openSUSE.

No, you do not need to first move to 4.2. Just hop on over.

If you feel confident go for it - 4.3

Added the Repositories you mentioned for upgrade to 4.3.1 and updated the system.
Konqueror still shows my machine to be 4.2.98 (KDE 4.2.98 (KDE 4.3 RC3)) "release 150". What else needs to be done?

Nothing. What you have is correct. That is how the numbering will be for a RC.
