Default Disable IPv6

Disable IPv6

Why?
Some ISP's are not 'up to speed' with IPv6, as a result you may experience Slow speeds when using the Internet. Disable it this way: (re-boot required)

Network Settings

Uncheck Enable IPv6

reboot

Mike, don't worry about it. I'm guessing you never actually setup your eth0 because it was probably just working from install. Network manager has just placed a control icon in your panel sys tray.

The "one line CLI way" would be:

Code:
su -c "echo 'install ipv6 /bin/true' > /etc/modprobe.d/ipv6"
and reboot the machine.

Forgive my ignorance, but shouldn't your howto be in the wiki along with the other ways of doing this that are already there?

I suppose I am also asking the more general question about tips like this that have been around and used for some time now i.e. shouldn't we be using the openSUSE wiki/howto in preference?

These are not meant to be rhetirical questions...

I have to agree there needs to be more input into the wiki, but it needs some wiki masters.(Can't remember what I was looking at but it was dated may of been ftp)

Everyone helps in there little ways and I propose if someone finds a tip/tweak/faq/howto and wishes to do it then they can.

I agree some from the community do need to take on the challenge, but it isn't necessarily someone posting in howto's here. It can be anyone that takes the info and transcribes it.

Though in this case I suspect it is already in the wiki. Even if it is in the wiki doesn't mean people will search there before coming here.

I didn't notice this way of doing it (by caf4926) when I searched the title on opensuse.org before posting. Several other ways came up. A user may want to know if this way offers advantages over the other methods (including me)?

I found your general comments helpful. I only used this one as an example of the more general question about where is best? I had to make a similar choice not so long ago and was interested in the OP's reason for choosing this forum, as I did then.

I have nothing against editing the Wiki. I do fair amount of it, though mostly in HCL. I'll take your suggestions to heart and apply them if possible. As is often the case, there is more than one way to skin a cat (as the saying goes). CLI is fine, but it puts the fear of God in some newcommers. This HowTo, along with one on Disabling Auto-Login - were meant to be very simple. Hence the 'Screenshots'. Just what the Newbie ordered.

In regards to better or not I suspect it is little more than cli vs gui.

I suspect yast is doing the same but without looking at /etc/modprobe.conf before and after I'm speculating.

Then in regards to said wiki page I note a reference to 10.3 while most will read over it I suspect a few will fear to tread because of 11.1.

Now personally I'm useless with Wikis and leave that to people with better documentation skills than I. As for making the decision when or not that's up to you as a contributor. Though in a community contribution be prepared to defend your edit and to reason if others have different ideas. No one owns a wiki page.

As for when and where? That is one for the wiki/wiki mailing list. I struggled understanding SDB in context with the wiki myself, as well as bad documentation skills.
