Default Wine - windows apps in Linux

Wine tutorial
( the tutorial with images is here)

Install wine

Go to Yast software search for wine and install it.
Or in a console as su type zypper in wine
If you want to get the latest updates you need to add the wine repository here

General setup up

First you need to install wine. See above
Once it is installed press Allt+F2 and enter winecfg in the text field (you can do the
same by entering it in a console)

  1. The first window shows the general settings. In the versions field
  2. select Windows Xp if it is not already selected Under about enter your name,
you can leave the organization field empty if you want. I just entered my initials
  3. Set the sounds settings so that only Alsa is selected
  4. In the Application tab you can add the applications you often use and set the default windows version for
this i use "global settings" but feel free to experiment.
  5. You can also add custom paths in the Desktop integration tab

Installing Programs with wine

Installing programs with wine is almost exactly the same as in windows.
You just click on the installer .exe file. The first time you do this it ia a good idea to
right click and choose other enter wine in the field and check remember
application choice.
There is a list of programs that run with wine arrowhere.
Quite often you will not be able to run the latest version with wine. For example
the latest version of Photoshop is CS4 but wine will only run up to CS2

Creating links to wine programs

Syntax wine "c..program files\NameOfProgramFolder\ProgramName.exe" (note replace c.. with c: as colonp became )
Example - Photoshop:
wine "c..program files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Photoshop.exe"
In KDE to create a desktop link

  1. Browse to your desktop folder right click and choose create new "Link to application"
  2. On the General tab enter the name of the application.
  3. Go the the Application tab and enter the name again and the link in the command field as above for Photoshop.
  4. Go back to the General tab and click on the icon button, choose other icons and brows to where you have icons.
These need to be in png format you can get them if you google for images and search for small images.
  5. I don't use Gnome but the process is similar:
On a free area of your desktop right click and choose Create Launcher
Type: Application
Name: Photoshop
Command: wine "c..program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Photoshop.exe"

Changing the theme

  1. 1. If you have XP mounted you can find the default Luna theme in PathToWindowsC/Windows/Resources/themes/luna1.
    On my machine /windowsC/WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/Luna.
  2. Open winecfg as above. Click on the Desktop Integration tab.
  3. Now click on Install Theme
  4. After that browse to the folder that contains the themes .msstylefile and select it.
  5. Choose the theme
