Default suse 11.1, unable to configurate wlan card

I've already posted my request in german. Anyhow, to get more response, once again in english.

It's the first time I have installed linux (suse 11.1) and I got pretty hard problems with the installation of my wlan card. I got the message "Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details." at Network Settings in Yast2. I have an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200bg wlan card.

following problems.

1) where can I find the output file "dmesg"?
2) I have the driver for the wlan card but if I try to compile it (make) I get the error message "ieee80211 missing" or something similar. hence I've downloaded ieee80211..., tried to install it. This time I get the error message autoconf.h is missing (in folder </lib/modules/.../build/. >

the mention folder is empty except for the file Module.symvers

Any suggestions for solving my problem?

Thanks Fabian

Nowhere, because dmesg is a command and not a file.

Stop it, you won't need to compile anything.

As always, read the "Sicky" threads in this subforum and provide more information, the threads will give you an idea how to do that.

I've read the sticky's and I can find the line "Wireless LAN" in Hardware Information. But if I click on "+" there is no line with the Information "Kernel Driver". I only can find "Driver" which says "Active: No", "modprebe: Yes" and "modules -> modprobe ipw2200".

And you really think I can help you with this minimal information?

The only answer I could give you with that is "I have the same card on my old laptop and it works out of the box."

If you really have read the stickies, then you know where to find a diagnostic script to make it very easy for you to give some _useful_ information.

dmesg|less Here I've no entry with "WLAN Found" or similar. I can't find any entry for the wlan card.

Things you have not done:

- read the stickies completely

- followed my suggestions

- posted any useful information although you have been told to do so and how to do so repeatedly

Things I won't do until I have more information:

- rubbing my magic crystal ball to see the future (or the past or the present in some other dimension)

- sacrifycing a chicken to read the informations out of its bones ...

- all other kinds of Voodoo
