If you scan as an unprivileged user, then the utility only gets what is in the
buffers at the time. If you scan as root, then an active scan is done and you
are more likely to get all the AP's; however, if they don't respond, they do not
    show up.

Just like in the Windows world, you need to configure the interface, which you
    have not done.

The only problem I have with you is your attitude. If you ask good questions,
read the provided materials, and don't blame us for your ignorance, we will get
    along just fine.

Ok, I tried to scan as root, and it does the same thing.
so leaving aside differences, how do i configure the driver? is it through network settings on yast?

Yes, if you use the traditional ifup method. If you use NetworkManager, use the
network applet on the desktop and click the New Connection.

Do the readers of the list get as tired of reading the above paragraph as I am
    of writing it?

Unhappy Re: opensuse 11.1 versus Linksys WUSB600n

I tried setting the wireless the traditional way. It did not work, so I switche to NetworkManager and after setting it up it did not work either. this is what the networkManager notification says:

    Network device removed
    NetworkManager is connecting
    NetworkManager is now connected
    NetworkManager is now disconnected
    New network device found
    New wireless network found
    Switched to offline mode
    Wireless network dissapeared

It's like the wireless device turns on for a second and then goes off again.

I have a windows partition in my PC and the wireless adapter is working perfectly in there, so I know is not a hardware problem.

    Any other suggestions?

then I get to this point

So remove the compat-wireless and try the rt2870-packages, that should at least give you a wireless interface to work with.
    how do I install rt2870-packages?

Unhappy Re: opensuse 11.1 versus Linksys WUSB600n

Ok so I installed the two packages as suggested:

    Code:
    uname -a
    Linux linux-12c2 2.6.27.21-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2009-03-31 14:50:44 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    rpm -qa "*compat-wireless*" "*ralink*" "*rt*70*"
    rt2870sta-kmp-pae-2.1.1.0_2.6.27.21_0.1-1.1
    ralink-firmware-1.1-13.1
    then

    Code:
    iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    eth1 no wireless extensions.
    so I did this:

    Code:
    modprobe -rv rt2870sta ; modprobe -v rt2870sta
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27.21-0.1-pae/updates/rt2870sta.ko

    iwconfig

    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    eth1 no wireless extensions.
I don't even get the led light to turn on.

    just in case:

    Code:
    dmesg|tail -n 30

Cool Re: opensuse 11.1 versus Linksys WUSB600n

I finally got this driver to work, and successfully tried it in two different computers with the same usb linksys adapter.

The instructions given in this thread are good but incomplete.

This might not be the most orthodox way to do it, but it worked for me perfectly, and I have tested it for two solid weeks of uninterrupted connection!!

As I said before I'm new in linux so I used my common sense and intuition to get it to work. Hopefully this will work for many more, but I have to warn you once again... I don't know if this is the best way to do this!!! try it at your own risk (even thou is not that risky!!)

This is how I got it to work (you don't have to do everything I did, just the last part, I'm just explaining how I found the solution):

I noticed that there was a thread in an Ubuntu forum explaining how to get the driver to work, so after three weeks frustrated with opensuse, and total silence in this thread, I tried ubuntu. After following some simple directions the driver worked perfectly. I checked all the files that where used and made copies of them.
Since I prefer the look and the overall feeling of openSUSE I installed it again and followed all the steps in this thread paying attention to the differences with ubuntu, and noticed that there was a .dat file missing in the installation of the RPMs suggested here. so I manually created the folder where the missing file was supposed to be and reseted my network, and it worked.

5 pages of threads did not resolve this situation, but here are 5 clean steps to get it to work:

**BEFORE YOU START MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE FILES THAT MATCH YOUR KERNEL AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE CAPS** (something I did not do the first time and pissed Akoellh off)

    1. remove:

    compat-wireless-kmp-pae-*some-version*-i586.rpm
    rt3070sta-kmp-pae-*some-version*.i586.rpm

    using yast or konsole.

    2. Install:

    rt2870sta-kmp-pae-*some-version*.i586.rpm

that can be found at Index of /repositories/home:/Akoellh/openSUSE_11.1_Update/i586

    and also install:

    ralink-firmware-1.1-*something*.noarch.rpm

that can be found at Index of /repositories/home:/Akoellh/openSUSE_11.1_Update/noarch

as suggested by Akoellh (here is your credit)

    3. Download this file:

    RapidShare: Easy Filehosting

file uploaded by the EVIL people of Ubuntu!! (here is their credit)

once you download it uncompress it somewhere and using konsole, log in as root using su, and create this folder:

    Code:
    mkdir /etc/Wireless
    mkdir /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA
then copy rt2870sta.dat (the missing file) into the just created folder:

    Code:
    cp /folder_where_you uncompressed_rta2870sta.dat/rt2870sta.dat /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/
    4. Restart your computer and set your network settings either using the traditional method or NetworkManager.

    5. Enjoy!!!

...and if this worked for you please post a response so I can feel better knowing that an Ignorant like me was able to help somebody, and it also would feed my HUGE ego!

if it does not work... post a response... I don't know much but I just spent my last three weeks resolving this problem, so I might be able to help some more!!
