Hi. i read the sticky thread and followed the steps given in it.So here is the result :
"II. What device do you have?" well i went to YaST => Hardware => Hardware Information i checked for the entry "Wireless LAN". It was there. Then i found the "Kernel Driver" line, i dont know what you mean by its value but it looked like this : Kernel Driver:ath5k "III. Do you need to install external firmware?" Then i went to the /var/log/boot.msg. I have to say that i did not found any entry of the word "firmwire" in the entire log , neither did i found the radio kill switch line althought i can paste that here if you want me to do that. so i had to stop as the firmwire seemed important thingy so dicided to get help before i move on. |

another way to try posting the details may well be to try this:
go here Benutzeranleitung/Usersguide von/of collectNWData | collectNWData.sh download the script to your desktop follow the instructions Quote:

The message is clear on what to do, so you should do as said:

thank you, sir! i took your advice and went over to the site that you so graciously pointed me to:
CND0240E | collectNWData.sh Fehlermeldungen where i was informed that the script found this particular error by doing these two tests: Script test /etc/sysconfig/network/config is checked for NETWORKMANAGER=yes and then it's checked that in /etc/sysconfig/networkd/ifcfg there exist no configuration for the network cards. unfortunately for me, i do not know if i can trust the results of the script test as i have no directory: /etc/sysconfig/networkd i do, however, have a similarly named file in a similarly named directory: /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0 could this have been what the script tested against? or perhaps this is yet another glaring oversight on my part? also, i was a little confused by the fix as described: Problem fix Use yast with Network Devices -> Network Card -> Select Networkcard -> unconfigure all network cards the selection "Networkcard" doesn't exist for me. what does exist are, "DSL", "ISDN", "Modem", "Network Settings", "Remote Administration (VCN)"...by any chance, could the fix be one of these, and not the "Networkcard" option? My guess is that the changes need to be made in "Network Settings"... whether the changes that i need to make are made in "Network Settings" or somewhere else, would you mind spelling those changes out for me? thanks for your help! -malcolm |

The problem is, that the Naming scheme in YaST has changed over the last few releases, however /etc/sysconfig/networkd is certainly a typo.
Remove all files /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-*something* except ifcfg-lo and ifcfg.template and restart the networking services with "rcnetwork restart" as root.

Yes, indeed. Typo fixed

thanks, akoellh and framp!
i tried this: Remove all files /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-*something* except ifcfg-lo and ifcfg.template and restart the networking services with "rcnetwork restart" as root. but found that this did not fix the problem. my connection speed was still low (1Mb/s) and the connection was still dropping off sporadically but automatically (if not instantaneously) reconnecting at the low connection speed. one observation: the connection speed does not stay constand, but rather fluctuates. so i decided to re-run this: collectNWData.sh this time, i got these error messages: !!! CND0180I: The system can't ping external IP address 195.135.220.3 !!! CND0150E: There might be problems with the default gateway definition 192.168.0.1 on interface wlan0 then i went to framp's site to see what fix to apply for these particular error codes, but here's what he had to say about the first one (CND0180I) Cause of error message This is an informational message because there are a lot of possible causes of this error. collectNWData should have written more detailed error messages. Problem resolution Look for other errormessages and visit the corresponding pages in this WiKi. so i did just that, and here's what he had to say about the second error message (CND0150E) CNProblem fix For a SuSE distribution you can defined the default gateway as follows: Network devices -> Network card -> Change -> Select any network card -> Routing -> Defaultgateway You have to define the router which is used by the client as the default gateway. If the client is connected directly to a DSL modem kinternet handles the assignment of the default gateway which was passed by the ISP. If this doesn't happen you have to check the modem configuration. the only issue here is that in network settings, i have "user controlled with network manager" selected for my network setup method, which means that i cannot set a default gateway as framp suggests one should. so i did a little more digging to try and give you folks more details around the problem i'm having. to that end: linux-2aiy:/home/malcolm # dmesg | less ath5k_pci 0000:03:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) > IRQ 17 ath5k_pci 0000:03:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 ath5k_pci 0000:03:00.0: registered as 'phy0' ath5k phy0: Support for RF2425 is under development. phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'pid' ath5k phy0: Atheros AR2425 chip found (MAC: 0xe2, PHY: 0x70) wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 try 1 wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 try 2 wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 try 3 wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 timed out ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A wlan0 direct probe responded wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 wlan0: authentication with AP 00:18:0a:50:06:a5 timed out wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:19:5b:57:b7:eb wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:19:5b:57:b7:eb wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:19:5b:57:b7:eb (capab=0x431 status=0 aid=1) wlan0: associated linux-2aiy:/home/malcolm # /usr/sbin/iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:19:5B:57:B7:EB Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=27 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B Encryption key:XXXXXXXXXXX [3] Security mode:open Power Management:off Link Quality=65/100 Signal level:-49 dBm Noise level=-91 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 pan0 no wireless extensions. linux-2aiy:/home/malcolm # /usr/sbin/iwlist scan Cell 04 - Address: 00:19:5B:57:B7:EB ESSID:"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" Mode:Master Channel:6 Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality=75/100 Signal level:-47 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm Encryption key:on IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : TKIP CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : TKIP CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: Unknown: 2D1A4C101BFFFF000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000 Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Extra:tsf=000005b4a9ae7180 Extra: Last beacon: 444ms ago one last thing, when i try to manually set the connection speed with: sudo /usr/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 rate XXM immediately after doing so, i checked the connection rate by this: /usr/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 | grep Mb and also by clicking "connection information" on the tray, both of which reported the connection to have changes to 54Mb after i had changed it to that. however, after opening firefox the connection dropped and would not automatically reconnect. any help you can provide is greatly appreciated, thanks!! |
