I have a NetGear WG111v3 802.11g USB stick with the realtek RTL8187B chipset. Today I attempted to install opensuse 11.1 and setup my wifi connection. As wifi cards gave me a headache ever since on linux, I was pleasantly surprised that the default 11.1 2.6.27.7 kernel supports the RTL8187B chipset. For the first time no troubles setting up my wifi after upgrading! It turned out slightly different. I hope this was one of those nights I'll look back at with a smile when I get it finally working. Cause one more time I'm on the verge of digging a deep hole in my ceiling and use an old fashioned network cable.
That being said ... my problem: - installed the default KDE 4.1 from the dvd image (32 bit). on /dev/sda8 (I have a fully working 11.0 kde 3.5 on the same machine) - after the first boot, fired up yast to configure my wifi. Changed nothing besides that I want to use Knetworkmanager. Everything turns out grey and I get a popup telling me that since I obted for Knetworkmanager, yast can no longer configure my card. It used to be different in previous versions, but so what. Tried to close 'Network Devices' by ok/accepting and I got a first error at 77%: Error: No network running.'Ok' and my yast screen disappeared. Fired up Knetworkmanager, it finds my ssid, detects that it runs with wpa. Made a new connection with the right settings and it *connects*. I see the default symbol that it's up and running. Except that I'm unable to go on the net. This while I'm online with another comp using the same router. - rebooting into my working 11.0 confirms that my usb adapter is still working - after trying not to go bananas I decided to reinstall 11.1 from scratch, without the automatic configuration option. Which resulted in the end in exactly the same problem. The results from the tests I've done (used pastebin.com): - ifconfig when I first booted after installing 11.1 (configuring wifi settings during setup), so without activating knetworkmanager - various pings - checking if i need some firmware - trying to scan - iwconfig - ifconfig after activating knetworkmanager - /var/log/boot.msg I really ran out of options and ideas. Any suggestions are very welcome, and I'll owe you a few beers when I get it working. cheers rik |

I solved my connectivity problem by using a new Marvell 88w8335 based pci card with ndiswrapper. But the bug/problem with the rtl8187B still remains.

I have the same problem with the WG111v3.
I use my router as dhcp server and i get an ip, but i cant ping the router that gave me the ip. Ive tried using ifup and networkmanager and it's always the same - i get an ip but nothing else works I've use the collectnwdata script for finding the problem but that didnt help at all. it says no dhcp server dedected- but i get the ip from the dhcp server. Here is what the script returned: |

I managed to run the WG111v3 on KUbuntu 7.10 using ndiswrapper with Win Xp driver and manually starting all network services(dhcp, wpasupplicant, connection via selfmade config file). So I know its possible to run that Wlan stick, but I was looking for a sipler solution |

I even used mine to install openSUSE 11.1 with the NET iso image on a WPA2 encrypted network. That is not with ndiswrapper, but with driver rtl8187. I don't understand why you are having so much trouble. Larry |
