Default Local DNS not resolving - KDE4.1 Suse11.1

Hi guys

I finally got around to moving from KDE3.5 to 4.1 (both under Suse11.1); although I've got most things working, Wifi and so on BUT I just can't seem to get DNS working locally.

I have a DNS server which has been un-touched as it resides on a separate machine.

I can things using DNS on the web but not locally;

eg ping Google works but ping myserver (local address 10.0.0.5) fails (I can ping it OK by IP address so I know the server's up and working)

I have checked my network configuration in yast but the entries are there.

I am sorry but I don't know where to begin or what config files you'll need to see, just ask and they will be posted!

Do you mean you only switched from KDE3.5 to KDE4 and did not upgrade the system?

I ask because a system thing like DNS has nothing to do with your destop. It should work for everybody loged in at the same time or not, using different sorts of DEs or the same, even when no DE is running and you work from the console or from telnet/ssh or how you can imagine (even when not loged in at all, daemons should be able to do DNS host lookups).
