Question Problem: Alice Gate W2+ configuration

Hi guys,

I will explain briefly what's my problem. I have the Alice Gate W2+ router and OpenSuse 11.1 installed on my notebook ASUS A7J. When I switch on my Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg card, a window for WPA key appears. I put the key and the card correctly connects to the router. Unfortunately, when I open the Mozilla Firefox browser, I receive th error "Server not found". In Windows I have to insert username and password in order to connect, so I think that I have to do the same in OpenSuse. I tried to apply the guidelines found in other threads but I'm really confused because I'm a Linux-newbie. What I've previously written for the Wireless card, is valid for the Ethernet card too. I need some help, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!! HELP ME!
Please post some simple and complete guidelines and commands. At the moment, I've Applet Network Manager installed, but, if necessary, I've no problem to install Wicd or other softwares. Thank you in advance!

Nothing........Today when I switched on my notebook, this time with a free-access connection, I obtained the same result. Moreover, Opensuse prompted me a windows saying that NetworkManager isn't able to start do to missing files...I think that it will be a good idea to uninstall and reinstall Network Manager. Someone can help me writing the step-by-step procedure to uninstall and reinstall it? I've already tried to do this from the yast installation console, but in order to do this, I need the internet connection......I can download all the needed rpm from another PC and transmit them to my PC, so post the URL of the needed files if you want.....THANK YOU

You can switch off all online repositories via Yast - Software Repositories. You will need the install media (DVD) when you run Software Management. Search for networkmanager - right click and select Update.
But you didn't say what packages it was quoting missing, which could help.
Is your install media a CD or DVD?

Angry Re: Problem: Alice Gate W2+ configuration

In this week many things changed!!!
I installed the last version of OpenSUSE 11.2 RC2 with KDE. The problem is still present with my home connection, but with other free-access connection the problem seems solved. So, I'm convinced that the problem is only that to connect to the internet it's necessary to put the username and password somewhere. In order to connect, my modem (Alice Gate W2+) needs both the WPA key and username and password. For example, in Windows I search for wireless connections then put I put the WPA key in my connection. After that, the procedure is to Connect to "My DSL Connection" and then put username and password in. The same is for the Ethernet connection. Please note that in both the cases I obtain the IP address without problem, but it's impossibile for me to navigate in Firefox or to Update the system. Where can I find a step-by-step guide to set username and password for the wireless/ethernet connection? Thanks

I'm not sure I understand this setup. Is this modem/router a live connection.
Like this:

Once a router is configured via the web interface it goes live. All you do then is connect to it, either with a physical wire or wireless. So it's this wireless bit that is confusing. All you should need is your WPA passphrase and have used the correct SSID.

The moment I read "Alice" I suspected what would happen next.

Just FYI (meaning all potential helpers):

In short, Alice (a german ISP) thinks it's funny to sell "Routers" to their customers which they "castrated down" to DSL modems with AP functionality.

So if this is the case here, one does not only need to configure the wireless part of the connection (associating with the AP) but also a PPPoE connection after that.

A real PITA and no fun to play with, so I'm out, but if anybody else wants to have some fun, good luck.

It seems as if NetworkManager cannot handle this kind of PPPoE
connection. See

for a discussion.

To the Global Moderator:
Yes, the picture shows exactly my situation!
The PC is connected wired or wireless with the router. The router is connected to the internet. No other devices or connection are employed!

In general:
I'm sure that my router behaves like an old DSL modem and needs username and password. Both the ethernet and the Wifi connections use the PPPOE protocol. HELP HELP HELP!

I found on the web that other Linux distributions (eg. Ubuntu) solved my problem with the rp-pppoe package. With this package it's possible to use the PPPOE protocol in Linux for my provider router typing pppoe-setup. The problem is that for OpenSUSE 11 this package isn't in the repositories and I think that it cannot be installed! OpenSUSE is fantastic...I don't think that it's not possible to solve my problem. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...many italian DSL providers needs still username and password authentication, so I think that this problem can limit the openSUSE diffusion in Italy. Thanks!
