I have seen something like this on a persons PC here in UK. But it's normally on those cr*ppy USB modems they dump on folk. You could be on the mark there though Malcolm.

Hi
Well I was wondering if it was set in bridge mode, but that seems moot
as it's also got wireless.

Although I guess the software could do that, but then you would only
have either wireless or ethernet at a time.

In windows my wifi works perfectly and even by cable. But in linux, none works. On direct connection, when i plug in the utp cable in my ethernet adapter with the correct settings i could not connect because of that program,needs to run.
I have a router, my connection it is not bridged.
As I said earlier the pc is connected by cable to the router and the laptop by wifi. In windows both work fine, but in linux, both find the network, both receive IP`s from the router, In both I can ping their servers and receive a 1ms response, but the internet...well it does not work. only on their address where I can download that application.

The router is a Siemens Gigaset SE 361Wlan, and the configuration was made by a good friend of mine who used to work for that firm ( my ISP), and later after warranty problem were made by me, exactly the same as he made them.
By the way, the program wich I was referring to is this one here

So you can get a manual for that here:
The router Gigaset SE361 WLAN by Siemens

You ISP should have given you a login. Usually your username + other
Eg:
Code:
joe_bloggs@adsllogin.com
And you should have a password.

You may have other info like this, but different:
Quote:

* VCI: 38
* VPI: 0
* Encapsulation: PPPoA VCMUX
* Authentication: CHAP
* MTU: 1492
* Primary DNS: 208.67.222.211
* Secondary DNS: 208.67.220.290
Do you have all this?

Have you tried hooking the laptop up directly to the router to see if
you can get out on the net? Good idea to do so even before trying to
use wifi, IMHO.

.....also what does cat /etc/resolv.conf show?

Find out what the DNS (nameserver) is on your windows setup for
comparison....they should be the same.

My dns are exactly the same on windows and linux.
@caf4926: I have my MTU:1500, dns servers are the ones which were given by the ISP, but I don't see ot don't know where to look for "encapsulation, authentication..VCI, VPI"
All the settings are exactly the same. But I can't seem to connect without that program.
Sorry guys for wasting your time, seems like the only way is to get rid of that ISP, but I cannot do that for the moment, or to get that kind of mobile USB modem from Vodafone, Orange etc.
Thanks again for your answers!

Look. The router is connected to the internet. The internet is already live inside the router. You do not need special software to connect to it.

Just connect your eth cable to the router and configure your network in Linux

Smile Re: Newbie question, Internet connection that is using a .ex

Here`s one idea that I had.
I cannot run that piece of soft in Wine, but if I install Virtual Box, and put MS windows Xp as guest OS, then run that application, it could be possible to connect to the net.
To clear some things out. Even in Linux, i can ping their server, get dynamic IP`s from my router, everything works perfectly but I cannot open messenger, google.com in my browser, only this address http://access.exs.ro to download that app.
I`ll try to talk to some guy at the tech support to see if there is something he can do from there, open some ports for me, or give me some kind of access, but if not I`ll try what I`ve said earlier.
Thanks everyone!
