New, kinda confused

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to get into Linux for more than 6 months, and when there were finally releases that fully support my laptop I made the switch (never regret, never look back)..anyhow, I've been really struggling with ubuntu 9.04 and I decided to give openSUSE a go, I don't have any issues nor problems but I was wondering if there's a to-do list after installing. I did "google" but didn't find much....

I would recommend the following -

1. Video driver (if you have an Nvidia or ATI card), in order to get better performance or for playing 3d games. For Nvidia you can simply add the nvidia repo (see below).

2. Multimedia - add the videolan (for libdvdcss in order to play DVDs)and packman repositories through Yast -> Software Repositories -> add community repository. Then run an update.

There are howtos available here somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look for them right now

It also has some post installation information.

The very first thing I do after installing openSUSE is ensure the PC has internet access. Once I confirm that I setup the PC for 4 repositories and ONLY 4 repositories. Those 4 are OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. Just those 4. No others. None. The odds are OSS, Non-OSS, and Update are already setup and all you need to do is add Packman. If you added others than those 4, remove them. There is guidance here how to do that: Repositories/11.1 - openSUSE-Community

Now you will read of others who say add additional repositories and my advise is if you do that its risky, and you should remove then IMMEDIATELY after you install the appropriate apps that require the repos. If you do not know the apps, then DO NOT ADD extra repos. Do NOT. In particular do NOT add and leave videolan as it is KNOWN to conflict with Packman.

Once you have those 4 (OSS, Non-OSS, Update, and Packman) setup, I recommend you go to: YaST > Software > Software Management and change the "filter" to "search" and search for and install some multimedia apps. Note that the Novell/SuSE-GmbH packaged versions of multimedia are often crippled for proprietary codecs, so in particular I always install Packman packaged versions of same multimedia applications. You can tell a Packman packaged application by the "pm" in the version number.

I typically install Packman packaged versions of amarok, amarok-xine, amarok-packman, libxine1, xine-ui, vlc, smplayer, mplayerplug-in, libffmpeg0, w32codec-all, libquicktime0, libxvidcore4. Some notes on those

• xine is used as a sound engine by many apps, so I install the xine-ui (user interface) so I can play xine to check out the sound engine. I do not use xine much for playback, rather I use smplayer.
• installing libffmpeg0 will cause various dependencies to be installed, where those dependencies will pickup many codecs. w32codec-all, libquicktime0, libxvidcore4 will also provide codecs
• mplayerplug-in is depreciated (I just learned that) and is being replaced by gecko-mediaplayer, so you may wish to consider that instead of mplayerplug-in.
• to get more information on Packman packaged applications go to the Packman web site: PackMan :: Startseite and use the search tab on that site. It works great

Did I mention only setup 4 specific repositories? Just 4 ? OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman.
