You really are unlikely to need codecs but if you are on a 32bit install, then search for codecs as long as you have the packman repository you should find iirc w32-codecsall. Running 64bit I've never come across anything that vlc or mplayer couldn't play, there is a couple of formats that the codecs will assist with though iirc.
As for the other intriguing I wait for the reply never heard of that one.
