Default Desktop not displayed properly

Running OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.0 dual boot. Just took a kernel update on 11.1 (which now won't start X - separate problem). On rebooting to 11.0, my Desktop icons are not displayed. The same items are still in the Desktop folder, they are just not displayed on the screen. The background color has reverted to the default green, and the bar at the bottom is OK. What causes this, and how can I fix it ?

It might be interesting to know if during your 11.1 usage you used the same /home partition as you use now on 11.0 because in that case 11.1 coould have changed things that 11.0 does not like.

No, the partitions are separate.

Maybe when you tell which DE youu use, people knowing that DE might come to your help. Mentioning KDE/Gnome/Whatever in the title might have been even more effective in drawing attention of the right people.
