I have found that Suse's defaults work very well.
Basic suggestions are as follows:

15 to 20 gig for Root/OS
1 to 1.5 gig for swap
As much as possible for your Home partition.

I used 32 GB in my new setup. I allways add an ISO image of the install DVD.
Just define it as a repository, disable the DVD repo and voila... I don't
have to insert the DVD and I save download time.

I've ran out with 2 GB on rare occasions. So this time, I've put in 8.
HD's cheap, so...

PS: Don't forget to back up. Without user intervention, or you'll skip it
sooner or later.
