Unhappy 11.1 update: ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]: no more dualhead

After online update of my machine on 2009-jul-19 the second monitor is dark with X11 while console mode (runlevel < 5) happily duplicates the primary screen.

sax2 is unable to adjust (center) the primary display (LCD AMW 19'' on vga port) if dual monitor mode is enabled.
Secondary DVI port is connected via a VGA adapter to a Compaq P900 19'' CRT.

After renaming /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reconfiguring with
'sax2' from runlevel 3 the problem pertains - the primary display is displayed incomplete, shifted to the left.
Dual-head mode still not possible.

Even in single monitor configuration runlevel 5 shifts the
primary display horizontally to the right while sax2 from
runlevel 3 did fit the screen exactly.

There was a warning in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that "SaxDual..."
is not being used - file overwritten while testing.

Any hints ?
Thanks, frank

Default Re: 11.1 update: ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]: no more dualhea

After a lot of search i found a thread dealing with xinerama problems
with the mga driver dated may-2009 where a downgrade of the X11 packages
was recommended by a SUSE developer.

Another google search told me how to do :
yast --> software --> search --> xorg
--> xorg-x11-server --> version --> 7.4-17.4.1

Yast does NOT adapt the other RPMs automatically, so the same
manual procedere was required for
xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-19.8.2
xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd-1.2.4_121202_4e89726-2.1.1
xorg-x11-driver-input-7.4-11.6.1
xorg-x11-server-sdk-7.4-17.4.1
xorg-x11-7.4-8.19.1
xorg-x11-xauth-7.4-8.20.1

BTW :
- only the graphic version of Yast has this 'version' button to select
any previous version of an installed RPM
- meanwhile i recreated xorg.conf avoiding 'xinerama' setting as
described in the x11 wiki for xrandr 1.2
- 'rpm -qa --last' does not give a real history, it knows about any
rpm ever installed but
- displays its last installation date only - not other previously
versions installed
- falls back to the date of first installation for downgraded RPMs
i could not find an option displaying every change happened.
- i was hit by this problem on 19 july - after recovering the machine
from a kernel update disaster where the kernel was updated but not
the driver modules, thus making the system non-boot due to lack of
a driver for my disk controler and had to download the missing
essential package(s) with another machine.
Other view : can kernel updates be directed to install newer versions
in parallel to the older kernels leaving a bootable prior GRUB-entry
in case of trouble (as it is done in SLES) ?
Alternative : Can anybody direct me to a procedere to mirror the
updates (and the many packages available for 11.1 but not on the
install-DVD) ?
- maybe i'm posting in the wrong forum but this problem is related to SUSE
online update and i could not find a more apropriate forum in
the list - please advice
